A recipe formulation software, into which you insert any recipe, and it would provide a decent description of the result, including the style fit. Aroma, flavor, etc. Of course, the brewer would enter basic system info and brewhouse efficiency expected. The user changes an ingredient or amount (or any parameter), and the description shows the result change. Is this my IPA-induced delusion of the day, or is there something out there that can really do this?

Well, Promash is a pretty close approximation of what you’ve described.

I use BeerSmith, but I mean going a step further. For example, BeerSmith requires that I choose the style - what if I could just enter the recipe and it would tell me what style(s) it would be a match for. Also a more detailed description (ala RateBeer descriptors)of the aroma/flavor effect of changing an amount, rather than just IBU or bu:gu ratio. How much more grainy if I use 5# 6-row vs. 2# 6-row in my recipe? Comparing the aroma effect of dry hopping 1 oz. Simcoe vs. 3 oz. Cascade (or blending the two)? What quantity of black barley would push my stout over the edge in harshness? Things like that. Sure would save time and reduce the trial and error when shooting for a precise profile. Just dreaming, I suppose...

A program will never be able to do that because you could brew the exact same recipe on different systems and get vastly different results.
