From the Beer Nut

The Brewers Association released the list of top craft brewing companies, based on sales. No. 1 on the list is the Boston Beer Co., makers of Sam Adams. Harpoon Brewery is 10th.

The rest of the top 10 are Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in California (2), New Belgium Brewing Co. Inc. in Colorado (3), Spoetzl Brewery in Texas (4), Pyramid Breweries Inc. in Washington (5), Matt Brewing Co. in New York (6), Deschutes Brewery Inc. in Oregon (7), Boulevard Brewing Co. in Missouri (8) and Full Sail Brewing Co. in Oregon (9).

"In 2007, 1,406 of the 1,449 breweries were small, independent and traditional breweries," said Paul Gatza, director of the Brewers Association.

The top overall breweries are still controlled by mass-market companies. Anhesuser-Busch is No. 1, followed by Miller, Coors and Pabst.

Thats weird i was under the impression Widmers sold way more than Full Sail , though I suppose they might be using the sales of Weinhard beers to bulk up the Full Sail totals.

The actual release from the Brewer’s Association is here:

This lists the top 50, as well as the macros. Interesting stuff, thanks for posting!

I think Spoetzl Brewery should not be on that list since they’re essentially a macro masquerading as a craft beer. 6/4/2008 1:24:54 PM

Maybe...I think they are somewhere inbetween...at least they try different styles and are a bit more experimental.

Could you expand on that, please? Compare it, maybe, to Sam Adams, which is largely contract brewed by macros but is still conisdered a craft brewery (and still able to turn out fine beers.)

49% control by A-B. Now no-longer a craft brewer.

They argued that the corn in the bock was added to enhance rather than mute the flavor...for some reason the BA bought that...don’t know why.

All of their products are produced without the use of adjuncts that mute rather than enhance the flavor of their product and they are independently owned.

Spoetzel, while being independently owned, does use adjuncts, yet they argue that corn in a bock enhances flavor somehow...as I stated above.hmmm...

Only Shiner Bock and Blonde us corn as an adjunct. All of their other beers are all malt.
