Something is wrong with pics of beer I am uploading. They are much bigger and blurrier than the original.

For example, today I have uploaded and RateBeer and/or Cloudinary shows it like

It was fine just a few days ago.

I’m not sure I’m following...

Indeed the picture, after getting uploaded, was enlarged. I notice that the picture on RB is 400 pixels wide, so maybe there is an automatic conversion to rescale everything to 400 px wide.
Since the conversion program cannot invent information, the picture looks like a zoom on the original one (blurred); but if your browser is capable to automatically scale the picture to screen size, you’ll see that the quality is more or less as good.

So, I don’t see any problem here.
I wish all beers had such good pictures...

The problem is that scaling a bitmap image up and down for no reason loses you quality, not to mention it increases file size and wastes bandwidth. I personally can easily see the difference between my original and the uploaded and upsized image that is reduced to original’s dimension for on-screen viewing.

So, would be nice if Cloudinary would leave the the pics alone smaller and better quality like it did last week.

Here’s a good one I uploaded a month ago

We had to implement new rules. Hopefully these small format shots will indicate the need to replace them. We prefer higher resolution originals.

I am all for hi-res photos, as we all now have retina displays and everything, but upsampling a small photo does not make it hi-res - it just makes it weigh more and lose some quality along the way.

Can you give more details about these new rules, Joe? How big is big enough? What should I do to not have my pics screwed by resampling?

Is this the same for place photos? I keep sending smaller sized photos, but could send the original size and let you (or other admins) resize if preferred.

I have also noticed a "blurred" quality to my photos as they are placed on here.
