Anyone use these yet? Style suggestions? I got a half pound to work with. I was going to do a single hop IPA just to get a feel for them, but some of the experiences I’ve read online make me think a hoppy Stout or even a Cal Common might be a better choice. I’ve also heard it’s super aggressive with insane oil content. Any suggestions on how much to use in a 5 gallon batch of low gravity IPA? |
Any other notes on what it smells like? |
Iv had a Kernel Pale Ale with Polaris in it. It was strange but good, the hop was herbal and an almost menthol character from it. Very clean and unique character. |

So far I used it in my most recent IPA. Polaris for bittering and Citra for late adittions and dry hopping. |
Originally posted by MagicDave6Thanks for chiming in Tom. The menthol thing is interesting. I get that sometimes from Northern Brewer hops, which is why I thought California Common might be a good choice. That’s the aroma variety used in Anchor Steam.... |

Yeah, menthol and/or peppermint notes in my (limited) experience too. |
This business of peppermint and menthol is over-exaggerated, I think from the original marketing of the variety in Bavaria. I use it in everything I brew, which is half-IPA and PNW half-stout (or citric hoppy dark low-grav mild, whatever you want to call it). Fabulous stuff, just a rich, tasty bitterness without one particular dominating note like citric, passion fruit, or whatever. |
I am having this beer right now - http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/af-brew-abv-not-ibu-polaris/300447/ and there’s absolutely no minty notes to it. |
