I just had an Avery Kasier from last year’s release. I probably have not had the beer since it first came to NYC circa 2006. I realized its like a small Samichlaus (big, sweet, alcoholic lager). |
Generally 1 year max. This is based on friends stash i’ve had. I’ve never aged any myself(not my style). It should be drinkable but I’d open it now. |

had 2 1/2 - 3 year aged one a while back, |
When Avery was moving from the Alley, they had some Kaiser going all the way back to mid-2000’s. I would think they would still be drinkable, but I’m not sure there would be any real benefits to aging for that long. |
Originally posted by DuffMan Sami is a popular beer to age. I recently did a vertical of 5 different batches from the first 7 batches at Eggenberg. None were as good as the 1996 Hurlimann 1996 I had 2 years ago. However, they were all still sweet, strong, and not overly oxidized. One particular vintage stood out for the group but for the life of me I forget which year. The 3L started coming out in 2007, I believe. I too have an 09 still and I drank a 2 year old magnum at my wedding 2 years ago. That one definitely could sit longer. I am still sticking to my theory that it may reach its best flavor in 50 years. The biggest concern is that the robber stopper may degrade. People in this thread were concerned about the 5 year mark. http://www.ratebeer.com/forums/aging-samichlaus-in-3-liter-jeroboam_66355.htm |
Originally posted by SudsMcDuff can you expand? Good or bad is very much a personal preference. For example, I enjoy an aged Sami b/c its not full of off putting cardboard or sourness. It get sweet touches, alcohol doesn’t sting as much as fresh Sami. I am wondering if a lot of oxidation sets in or some weird chemical flavors? From the almost 1 year old bottle I was getting none of that. So, I am surprised at Ratman’s experience. |
Originally posted by DuffMan you should crack it when I am around. We could do a whole Sami celebration. Get some of the barrel aged version, get some Helles, get some fresh stuff and wake up with horrid hangovers the next day. After my wedding, I think I had close to a liter of it left and I tried to consume it myself. |

Originally posted by SudsMcDuff Had a samichlaus that was about 8 years old. Horrible paper and cardboard oxidation and a dead mouthfeel. |
