there was already 10,000 dark lord threads on the main page.in fact,i think i saw more random d.l. threads on the main page than i saw iso/ft threads in the trade forum.

maybe dark lord needs its own section too? thumbs up

I missed your point, then. Are you saying that you want the trade requests on the main forum page, but you want to boot out the homebrewers and Europeans?

now imagine all the dark lord threads already there, then add all the FT and ISO dark lord threads mixed in.

would any of the other topics even been there?

I like those features you set up, and do use that, but being able to subscribe to the metros would actually be more important to me than the trade forum(since i regularly follow 6 or 7 metros)

Well, here is something I wish would happen .. if the server is being bogged down by these features we all love(a lot of them are things I have talked about wanting for years and love that they are being implemented), I wish the admins would say ’hey if we could raise $X we can upgrade the server or bandwith and make the site run smoother and be able to implement some other new features, x y and z over the coming months.’ I know if asked I would donate more than my premium membership to help the site grow, but if I’m not told there is the need for funds, I won’t blindly donate(I’m speaking in general about all the causes I support) If the local first aid squad sends me a letter asking for money, or sends me a letter asking for money to buy a new ambulance because one of the old ones is not adequate to serve our towns needs, I’ll be much more inclined to donate more knowing what the money is going to be used for and that there is a genuine need for the funds(and I wouldn’t donate any money at all if they hadn’t sent a letter to begin with).

I understand the reason behind not asking for donations, but at the same time the link to donate is buried on the premium membership page that no one ever looks at except for the day they renew their membership and I think a once in a while request for donations to help defray the cost of an upgrade wouldn’t be the end of the world. I know plenty of other people who would step up and donate if they were asked, or the fact that the site could use some money for upgrades was needed to support the new features being added..

sorry for the tangent.. I return you to the trade forum bickering, already in progress..

You are absolutely correct. Matt is quick to take a defensive posture. In this case he is very passionate about trading at RateBeer and works hard to try and make it the best place it can be for traders. When something threatens that, he gets defensive, frequently overly defensive. A lot of us, myself included, are also guilty of similar behavior.

We are all very passionate about this. We need the best solution.
Having trades on the main forum page was not the best solution.
Taking the trades off the main forum page was not the best solution.
Putting them back on won’t be best, either.

Let’s work together to find the best solution. There have been some good suggestions mixed in with the banter. What other new and different ways can we come up with that are better than anything we have had before and better than any other website out there?

1. I never viewed multiple, similar FT/ISO posts on the main forum page as "clogging." They just let me know a new brew had been released. And if these posts were staying on the main list for a long time, that just means the rest of the forums are that slow.

2. The threadjacking of trade threads is easily solved by the original poster asking for no discussion in the thread.

3. Subscription options would be ideal. A separate "Recent Trade Topics" box would be a nice compromise.

4. Never supported taking the trade threads off the main page. Still don’t think it was a good idea.

I’m not even sure if this is feasible or not, but here is my idea;

Maybe shrink the width of the main forums section and Daily Devotee section and add another column to the right of the DD for the recent trade topics.

(I hope I can explain this right)

Like if you look, there is some excess space between the last post time column and the post number column and there is also some excess space between the topic # column and the forum description text to the left of it. Maybe move those columns a bit closer together, and also shorten the width of the DD column to where the avatar and name, location, start date, etc. still fit, but there is no excess space to the right of that. That would free up some space to add a "recent trade topics" column to the right of the DD. That way the trade topics are still on the main page, but they are not clogging up discussion threads or bumping them to the bottom.

So basically, just resize the width of the "forums" and "Daily Devotee" sections (maybe the "recent topics" as well just slightly) to free up space to add a "recent trade topics" section on the right edge of the page. Again, not sure how labor/code intensive it would be to do it, but that was what I was thinking might work nicely.

Lol, I actually just realized that all of my computer monitors are widescreen, so that idea probably wouldn’t work since the text is probably much closer on a standard monitor. Oh well, I tried...laughing 5/4/2008 4:33:44 PM
