and actually, I would like someone to explain to me why putting such a list in the dead space on the bottom of the page would be a bad thing?(I would prefer this answer to come from an admin, or at least someone making a serious response)

Well, my thinking is to make productive change, while disturbing the rest of the site as little as possible. In all candor, I think I’d have an extremely hard time selling making more space on the main page for trade stuff.

Not if it’s just a small box on the bottom right hand corner which right now is just blank dead space anyway. Maybe something that lists the 5 latest trade requests or something along those lines?

But then people would have to use their scroll wheels, by scrolling down 2-3 notches. evil grin

I’m not an admin, but my serious response is that it is not a good long term solution.

I want to kick out the homebrewers and Europeans from the recent topic list. I don’t personally care about those forums so I don’t want to see their threads. If they were kicked out, then they, too, would want a section of dead space to come back to the main page.

I’d like to see the creation of more forums for more special interest groups (cellaring beer, home bar, etc). Again, not something to have in the recent topics but do they get a special section in dead space as well?

Also, anything you put in current empty space will take extra processing time on the server, which has been touched on earlier in this thread.

I want to see the coders to spend their limited coding time making good long term site changes that benefit everyone rather than just short term changes for special interest groups (even though I’m a member of this special interest group).

Which is the same reason I’m really for subscriptions(adds functionality everyone can benefit from), but in the meantime looking for some sort of middle ground.. between adding trading back and keeping it segregated.. I guess part of my problem is removing trading from the list has caused the forum to change quite a bit(toward rare only trades and trade offers with less responses than they used to have). I don’t see how the admins would be against adding something to the main page when they obviously had no problem removing it in the first place.

If the coding wouldn’t be that bad to add it, perhaps a trial period could be done.. say a month on the main page under its own ’recent trade topics’ and see how it is received, if the forum traffic stays consist then it can be removed again.. I really don’t see how anyone would complain about it being added by itself on the bottom of the page.. and if it was added to the bottom below the random graphic it wouldn’t really add anything more to the main page, just fill in the blank space that is already there..(although I’d rather it go where the ’recently posting’ thing is and have that moved over to the dead space, but any addition to the main page would better than nothing)..

(unless the blank space doesn’t exist on some platforms.. at least for me on all the computers/browsers I use(pc/mac ie/firefox/safari) there is a dead space on the bottom right..)

I see no dead space on the right. All I see is the DD and their top 7 ratings. I don’t see the recently posting section, either.

Agreed, I’m a member of this group as well and want subscribe-able forums more than any other site change. I am also for more forums that are subject specific in the end, and also want homebrewing/europe/food/industry off the main topics list.. if they want to be fair then remove the recent topics list entirely so everyone is treated equally.. right now the traders are being segregated by themselves, satisfying a few peoples wishes, if homebrewing was removed it would make me happy but piss other people off, same as the other forums. By removing trading they created this separation of treatment. If all this talk results in subscription forums great, thats what I’ve wanted all along. In the meantime I’ll push for a compromise to the problem which is to add a small recent trade list. I can’t imagine it adding that much more server load since the site used to populate the main list with the trade forum anyway, i can’t see it increasing the load that much from the way it used to be.

I’ll also say again that if these changes add additional stress on an overworked server then they should make that known and make the donations link a little more visible, or at least suggest that if donations are made such improvements could be implemented quicker.. I know I would respond to such a request, and am pretty sure many others would as well.

More forums with a subscribe feature would be what I hope the future of this site is. It’d also make it easier for those of us who follow more than 1 metro to keep track of them all. The one thing I like about BA is the ability to customize the main forum page to your liking. If RB would to do this, it’d make this site site even more awesome than it already is.
