Yeah I have caught one of my local distributors using false numbers that they claimed was a mistake when trying to push some beer out of their warehouse to local shops.... I corrected them and also explained that the ratings are always in constant flux especially when its a recently released beer and that dating the scores they post in their product catalog might be a good idea. But overall I think it can be a good educational tool and a good way to get people to use/find the site on their own so they can look to see what people actually said about the beer they found on a shelf with a 100pt RB score ! There is really only one local bottle shop that displays both RB and BA tags... they pick whichever one has a higher score I think :)

It’s certainly a lot more informative and accurate than wine spectator is for wine.

That being said, Whole Foods and Total Wine will only allow Beeradvocate. No idea why, but that’s the rule.

Not true... source: I’m a beer specialist at whole foods who uses ratebeer shelf tags.

Stone sometimes puts Ratebeer scores on the posters they send to bottle shops to promote seasonal releases.

FWIW, distros usually make those posters, or regional Stone reps

I’ve seen occasional labels/bottles with scores on them. Seems silly to put an ever changing score on a label that you have to get approved.

(did anyone actually read the OP?)

Seriously though, I have never seen a store use a RB shelftag with a score lower than 97. They won’t put a score of 80 for a pils or dry stout, even if it’s in the 100th percentile by style.
At least at one point a few years ago, Grape And Gourmet included shelf tags on virtually every single one of the beers they had on the shelf. Kevin would stock pretty much only the cream of the crop, but there would be a few stinkers and local beers that, while good, wouldn’t hit the highest threshold of either overall or style.

I loved the big fat "0" on Cave Creek Chili Beer that sat proudly on the shelf.

Yeah, Lithuanians have never forgotten this. It appears in Vidmantas Laurinavicius’s 2011 book on Lithuanian beer, too.

Kevin is a good guy! I have visited his shop several times and he always had RB shelf tags as well as the awards from us up on his wall. Funny enough with the cave creek beer he was always out of it because he used the shelf tags so well.

Whole Foods internationally is by far mostly RateBeer. I also heard Total Wine in SoCal switched from BA to RateBeer.

Are these scores percentiles? There seems to be a lot more really high and really low scores than scores in the middle.

I don’t use scores ever in making a purchase, but if my brewery had an over hyped beer I would sure as hell want those posted. I would think that the style score is much more useful from Ratebeer than the overall score.

I think anyone who doesn’t use RateBeer to buy beer must be buying either a lot of the same beer or an awful lot of disappointing beer.

There’s just too much out there right now -- with many bottles that never appear on tap -- to be buying stuff blind.

I will buy blind or based on retailer recommendations and am far too often disappointed. With prices escalating, this is not going to last long.
