The recipe specifically calls out the corn sugar as being used for priming.


and hence the reason I said in my OP that "NPR had said the recipes contained honey and corn suger and I was about to heap scorn until I read the recipes above and learned the corn sugar is just for bottling"

Yeah, corn sugar can be an essential ingredient especially in double IPA’s. It’s a simple sugar that helps a beer attenuate lower to achieve a dryer finish and lighter mouthfeel despite a higher ABV. The recipe for Pliny the Elder uses quite a bit of it in place of base malt.

Nothing wrong with using corn sugar in a recipe as long as it’s in the right context.
