So far I think I liked doing Italy as a beer trip the best: Toccalmatto, Goblin Pub, Ma Che Siete, Bir&Fud, Brasserie 4:20.
+1. Having Bruno Carilli take us down to Toccalmatto’s cask cellar with a pipette and a bunch of glasses. Umberto’s cooking with beer at the Goblin pub, trying to figure out what was in the unmarked kegs and bottles that Dany sent him from Fantome (answer: the bottles were grapefruit beer, we never figured out the kegs), and drinking with Umberto and the gang til 9 AM, after a death-defying drive through the hills at breakneck speed. Spilling out onto the street with a fresh glass of Tipopils from Mache, on the way to a special tasting at Bir&Fud. Doing shots with Alex at 4:20, then trying to find your way back to your Italian garden villa across the Tiber.
Oh yeah, Travlr was with me on that trip too
Actually, GT2 was with me.

Going to Maui in August 2010. Hawaii’s beauty, combined with trips to the Maui Brewing Company, made for the best beer and travel experience I’ve ever had. Because of the touristy location, MBC could get probably get away with serving bland, Gordon Biersch level brews but they put real care and effort into their beers--the ones I had ranged from above average to outstanding. The food was good also; some of the menu items were pricey, as things in Hawaii tend to be, but there were some good values to be had as well. The service was spotty but I guess you can’t have everything. To anyone who is fortunate enough to have a trip to Hawaii and especially Maui in their future, I highly recommend the Maui Brewing Company.

Northern California trip with my family. Except when I pulled into Lagunitas on a Monday and saw that Lagunitas is closed on Monday. Plan fail.

I once went to tour the Anheuser-Busch brewery. Met some remarkably interesting people there. And I drank Budweiser at the end of the tour. Top that.

Last summer in London: RBESG, Chriso’s tasting and then GBBF. It was an unbelievably beer-intensive 10 days. The stag do Mes had in Rome will probably remain the best stag do (i.e. bachelor party) I will ever attend. Alex at 4:20 will forever remain a legend in my book based on his hospitality that weekend. Although, Paul’s (Scopey) stag do in Brussels was pretty awesome, too. In two days, we did one of the Moeder Lambics, Hoppy Loft and regular Delerium, Cantillon, DHL and a handful of other places. My fondest memory of this trip was the Saturday morning. Paul, James and I were at Cantillon. We had just done the tour and then sat down in the cafe area with a bottle of the most recent Zwanze. We quickly realised we had to run to catch a train (to get to DHL). My two companions, lightweights that they are, wouldn’t (or couldn’t) finish their Zwanzes, so I ended up necking about three glasses in one minute. I think it was before 11am. That was a good day.

I’d easily say that living and working at De Struise for three months is by far my best travel and beer experience. Got to work along side Urbain every day and eat with his family every night. Truly amazing folks down on the farm. Add to that meeting with great people like Shaun Hill and visiting amazing beer destinations like the Kulminator and DHVL and I’m farily certain that will live on as one of the greatest experiences of my life.
