americanized brewery in vienna, itís just not my bag. the 1516 hop devil was, honestly, superb, but the rest of the beer was so-so and the staff was inattentive (yes, by european standards). the interior seemed to be a cross between a TGIF and a night club. hideously lit interior was filled with cigarette smoke. the patio was better but smoke was still difficult to avoid. the neighborhood and character of the patrons (us ex-pats) was not attractive to my tastes.

Visited 1516 on a number of occasions and is consistently a decent place to drink and eat. The beers are pretty good, particularly the IPA, and good food to match. Itís nice to find somewhere with variety so thatís a plus. Service on my recent visits can be very hit or miss. A cool brewpub in Vienna.
One of the top beer destinations in Vienna, no question. They make a great range of beers, including nice examples of IPA, DIPA, Stout, etc., whereas many of the other Vienna brewpubs make only lagers. Great ambiance, very good food. Two floors - one smoking, one non-smoking. The location is quite central so itís easy to come here. A must-visit place for any RBian visiting Vienna.
(Visited 04/2009): This brewpub is located toward the south end of Vienna off of KrugerstraŖe near the Stadtpark. Not too terribly far from the subway so it is accessible from the Danube port. There is parking on the street immediately in front of the building as well.
There was a soccer game going on during our visit so the inside was absolutely packed with smoking patrons with no air conditioning. The brewpub is two levels with a bar on each. The lower level bar has a large chalkboard showing what beers are on tap, and there are high tables for seating. The rest of the place has table seating, and there is a patio out front, which is where we ended up.
The beer selection is decent. They have around 6 available and they seem to be more of an American influence than German/Austrian. Amber, Stout, IPA etc. The beers were slightly above average. We didnít try the Hop Devil because we assumed it was a guest tap...what are the odds?
Service was about what we expected for the region, coupled with the place being overflowed with raucous soccer fans. Our beers arrived fairly quickly once we were finally noticed and our check came shortly after we were able to get the serverís attention to ask for it.
We did not try any food on this visit.
Overall I enjoyed the experience and beer at 7 Stern more than at 1516, which seemed to have much more of a touristy feel. Still I would try to visit here again when it was less hectic to enjoy their beers in a more relaxed environment.
My favorite brewpub in the world. Itís the first place I go upon my every arrival in Vienna and if Iím not late for the plane - the last place before departure. Itís really that good. Constantly rotating seasonals are fantastic! Being a loyal customer of this establishment for well over 10 years (I come to Wien quite often) - I have tried huge number of these, and I must say - they never disappoint - always creative & top quality. Food is also good here. 1516 beef burger being my top choice.
Got to pay a surprise visit to the place thanks to a missed connection in Vienna. Nice American style bar-like feel on the main floor - the Sugar Bowl was on the TV while I was there. Main floor is smoking, but the upstairs is smoke free. They had only a half dozen beers on tap, including a guest tap from the US. However, the selection was certainly interesting. Food was reasonably priced and very good. Beer was pretty good as well, and all were available in many sizes for the taster mentality. Staff was great. Good place overall; glad I had a chance to try it out.
Not necessarily the most authentic spot in Vienna, but rather an americanised brewpub. The beers are absolutely top-notch and compete with 7 Stern for being the best in the city, hence the Country. A central position confirms it as an absolute must on your first day in Vienna. Rather trendy place with TV screens showing sports events and a high customer rotation. The service simply was the best I had in Vienna as well, very friendly waitressses.
Slightly too hip, too crowded brewpub just a few minutes from the Opera. Donít really care for the Bar itself, but I love their beers. The best place to get Ales in Austria, I reckon, and they are always doing something nice. Their Hop Devil is fantastic, as were the Big Balls Lager and the Weizen Rauch Bock. (I was there many times over 6 months in 2006).
