Not the kind of place you want to go searching for beer, but this is a pretty nice upscale grocery store with really good food to choose from and tons of condiments for food.

Sort of the last place in Chapel Hill you would look for beer, Southern Season is a large, densely shelved wine and cheese store masquerading as a Fresh Market/Whole Foods though it is too cramped to have a cart and there is not much in the way of groceries. You can get sandwiches and stuff to go. Mostly a place to pick up specialty cheese and wine. In the back of the store seemingly where the bathrooms would be is a small, dark "cubby" with one refrigerator and dark shelves. This is one of the few places in the area where you can pick up De Dolle and Hitachino Nest beers. Odd English/Scottish beer are present here. Itís definitely worth a peek in but a waste of time if you are already planning on stopping at Samís Quik Shop in Durham which has 100x the selection. Southern Season actually has a restaurant attached called Weathervane which was pretty good, but not too outstanding compared to other higher end Chapel Hill places like Talullaís, Lantern, Il Palio. The restaurant here is more like Panzanella at Weaver Street Market but not as good or as fun.

Southern gourmet grocery that helped start a trend. Wines are awesome, beer selection catching up. There is a restaurant inside the store called the Weather Vane. Good casual dining. Enjoy the place on a Sunday afternoon. Get beer, go home and watch the Panthers.

Itís like a small Wegmanís with a Williams Sonoma in the middle. They had a nice selection of artisinal foods including a whole wall of single plantation chocolate. Yes the beer is confined to a corner area but they had a nice mix of regional and European craft. I wish they had more local stuff but Iíd definitely go again. They do good care of their product and theyíre really good to customers.

A fun place to shop if you want to throw some dollars at needlessly expensive chocolate, cured meats, chutney, and the like. And who doesnít? High end (for NC) niche shopping defines this place but this has never translated into anything but a passable beer selection. Tucked away in a little bitch corner of the store (can you say kidís table?), thereís a decent assortment of Belgians, Germans, and US craft stuff. And there are discounts, the annual sale, etc., but itís hard to get too enthused.

Ambiance - No doubt, the whole store is a fun place. But the beer room (yeah, itís a room) isnít the most enjoyable enclosure. Service - Good luck finding anyone here that cares about beer at all. If youíre into wine, youíll be in heaven. Selection - Arranged by state/country. Not much to choose from and stock rarely changes, but always a great stock of Belgians, Unibroue, and Dieu Du Ciel. No rhyme or reason to the US breweries they decide to stock. You wonít find the things youíd expect to find in a regular craft beer store here, but youíll find something interesting. Food - They have great food here. Value - Prices are gourmet store prices, significantly higher than other shops in the area. Overall - I stop here maybe 3 times a year. You can do much better. You might find one or two things here that wonít be in stock elsewhere, but youíd be better off coming here to do a big shopping trip, maybe have lunch and some chocolate, then grab a couple beers on your way out.

Huge store with wide variety of food, cooking gadgets, and gifts. Helpful staff. Great food and deli area. Very good wine selection. Beer selection is extremely small in comparison. Okay selection but based on the rest of the store they definitely leave you hoping for more. Overpriced.

Huge cooking store. If there is some kind of weird cooking utensil that you have been looking foritís there. Store is a lot bigger on the inside, and is semi-maze like. Beer selection is small, centered around Belgium, and lacking on local beers, but the staff is friendly. Slightly overpriced, whole foods has better prices just down the road. Lots of coffee too if thatís what youíre into. Gigantic wine selection.

This is a huge store if you like food. Aisles dedicated to individual condiments, candy, imported candy, tea, coffee, glassware, kitchen utensils, etc. You cook...its there. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Wine selection definitely outshines its beer selection.
