Small cosy citypub, in the citycenter. Can at times be a bit crowded, not having that many seats... A bit worn out place, but in a nice way. Great range of beers, most times in good condition. Friendly staff, even though they sometimes seems to think, that we take to long time to decide, which beer to have :-)
For sure worth a revisit...

Every shopping street should have a place like this, yet very few have. Slap bang in the main pedestrian shopping area of Reading, an ideal place to pop into for a swift drink. Small, not to say a bit cramped. But has plenty of character. Youíll always find three or four West Berkshire beers here, complemented by another three or four guests, which are rarely common beers. So thereís usually a scoop or two. Recently had to change its name from the Hodgoblin due to extortionate (financial) demands from Marstons, who own the brand name. Boo hiss to Marstons. Actually, the new name describes it pretty accurately. An archetypal, no frills, town centre ale house. Some people have found the landlord a bit grumpy but Iíve always found the staff fine, if sometimes a little world weary. An essential stop on any Reading visit.

Very cosy small pub, with brilliant old school music playing (old rock/progressive/new wave/punk/reggae). Quite "worn looks", but at the same time almost felt like home. Good selection of real ales, with also f.i. some Lovibonds on draught/keg.

What a nice and cosy Pub. 8 casks, few taps and bottles. Love the interior with beer labels all over the walls and ceiling and after 3 consequtive days of visiting the same table was uncleaned. Guy (first night) behind the bar fits well with the name of this establishmen ;). Quite a lot guests indicates that the place is appreciated. I will definately return.

I really like this place, there are a number of taps with lots of regularly changing guest beers and a couple of regular local real ales. Its a bit dingy but that kind of adds to the charm - it feels and smells like a real ale pub. Good place to go if you are waiting for someone whoís going round the Oracle.

Good location. Barely any seating. Staff are always very rude. Every single time. Selection is great and never had a problem with beer quality. Lots of arsehole suits on the evening and tosspot goth posers during the day. Very expensive but in line with Readng prices.

Fascinating pub near the centre of Reading. Just by looking at all the beer mats and memorabilia you can tell that this is a great pub for beer. It is a small venue but this helps create a unique and interesting atmosphere. Great selection.

Excellent selection of (predominantly local) brews - Always several from West berkshire, last time I was there there were also beers from Lovibonds, Hop Back and Oak Leaf.
Clientele interesting, varied and friendly - although with a lean towards goths and students which is surprising given the location (immediately opposite Readingís premier shopping centre).
Due to the tiny size of both the bar and pub it can take a while to get served - and even longer to find a seat. Even if you do get a seat, the tables are set in tiny alcoves - so donít bring too big a crowd! Itís also worth noting that you may want to visit the bank before coming here, as prices are on the high side even for Reading - £3.30 - £3.80 a pint!
With the extraordinary decor of old pump clips covering all walls and ceilings, this is a truly unique place, and should not be missed by real ale lovers visiting Reading. However, despite friendly staff and customers, it can get rather claustrophobic, and Iíve never felt comnfortable staying here for too long. I consider it somewhere to visit and enjoy in passing, rather than (despite the rapidly changing ales) somewhere that Iíd go for a whole evening.
Given the location, the site must be worth a fortune, and I hope the property developers never get their hands on this truly special place. Long may the Hobgoblin last!

A good town centre pub with plenty of beers on offer - 4 came from West Berkshire and 3 were milds. Got rather busy around the bar, but there was plenty of space available in the snug round the back. Staff were friendly enough.

Great pub in the centre of town, a little gothic in attitude with a diet of rock music played. The beers are varied and generally kept very well. Lots of small alcoves to sit in if it isnít too busy, Friday night was chaotic however. There is a small area out the front for drinking too, watching the shoppers going about their business..
The bar area is tight, small and you have to reach across barflyís to get your beer.
Overall a great boozer.
