Leckere Ratsherrn Biere vom Fass im gemütlichen Innenhof bei schönem Wetter, was will man mehr?

The place looks nice and inviting, and the beer menu has an interesting mix of international favorites and upcoming German yummies. Why mess up a nice operation with poor service? I got in thirsty and spent half an hour trying to get a staff member’s attention. Had a superb local pale ale, paid for it, then faced a waitress trying charge me again for the beer. Oh well, at least I got her attention.

Nice place, not obvious on the map but it’s in the last row furthest from road, you can pass through the Craft Beer Store to get to it. Central bar with seating, including some comfy seats, around outside plus a patio. Got a modern U.S. Brewpub feel to place, good range of beer with specials and guests plus bottles. Staff were friendly. Tasting tray available but has a set menu. Best of 4 brewpubs in Hamburg by some way and a must try.

UPDATE I’m afraid the service and overall experience at this place has taken a turn for the worse. They increasingly seem to rely on their loyal customers, who still turn up in droves, apparently with a lot of excess money in their pockets, not minding the sky-rocketing prices (9,90 for a beer, why not!). And the staff let things slide. The tap list isn’t updated, specials get announced by a single poster on a wall somewhere, and if you’re waiting to request a follow-up beer from one of the tables – good luck getting anyone’s attention. Worst of all, even at the bar – usually the best spot in good brewpubs – it happens that you will spend painful time before your empty glass, or even have it taken away from you without being offered a refill. Not that there’s a shortage of personnel. There are always three or four people behind the bar. But they are way too busy rummaging around, washing things and drying things and stacking things, all the while avoiding eye contact with the thirsty crowd. It’s a shame, really. ORIGINAL REVIEW This is one of the first craft beer bars/restaurants in all of Germany, established by the Ratsherrn Brauerei five years ago, and it continues to be one of the best. The beer experience is immersive, as the brewery is right next door (offering tours), as is their craft beer store, with a real good, albeit pricey, selection of international and German brews. Limited Ratsherrn editions will be sold here, not necessarily in supermarkets. The Braugasthof is well thought-through, with a multi-level layout, great ambience (if a bit on the dark side - but there’s a fireplace!), a large patio and very good food. Dishes are classics with a twist, there’s also snacks like a basket of bread, which is baked on-site. The big bar sits in the middle of the place, it has a chilled iron plate running around the length of it, to keep your beer cool. Nice touch. Tap selection is mainly Ratsherrn, with a couple of German brews added (Schneider Weisse) and one or two guest beers from abroad. They recently had a Mikkeller on, now there’s a Polish Black Wit. With their own micro-brewery being able to crank out at least two new beers every month, this is the place to taste them. Some of them never see a bottle. Their IPA is actually pretty good, they also put out a quadrupel this year. Service can be hit and miss - depending on who you’re talking to, knowledge of the specials on tap can be sketchy or even non-existent, at other times you get a whole sermon on tastes and styles. The bottle selection is good and ordered by style. Prices are way on the high side, though. 6,30 for a big one is borderline ridiculous, guest beers are so expensive that your wallet will be drained before you get drunk. However, patrons seem to be willing to pay - the place is always packed. With special annual events like the Bock Beer Day and Craft Beer Days that attract brewers from wide and far, this is still Hamburgs go-to place when it comes to beers out of the ordinary. But other beer-minded places are starting to gain popularity, so beware, Altes Mädchen.

Sehr geile Location mit einer großen Auswahl an Craftbieren direkt neben dem Craftbierstore - wenn das mal keine Insel der Glückseligkeit ist. Top: Eisgekühlte Metallleiste am Tresen, die die Biere frisch hält.

Sigh. The place brings to mind the famous Yogi Berra quote, “nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded”—which is to say, they must be doing great business, because it really pays to make a reservation but partly because of that, I haven’t been there in months, and I don’t miss it. There are other reasons: for one, the prices for non-Ratsherrn beers have become ridiculous. Yes, they quite obviously cater to a clientele with a lot of disposable income and in a market economy, you set prices at whatever the market will bear, but 6,90 for, say, a bottled Crew Republic IPA? *Really*? The clientele, incidentally, is another reason for me not to come rushing back here -- too many people coming for the food alone and ordering wine with it -- but that’s a matter of personal preference. Look, I get it, this is a business that needs to and is supposed to make money, not anybody’s idea of a craft beer club house -- but I’d prefer if it were a little less obvious that beer is a means to that end, and not an end in itself, or even, dare I say it, someone’s passion. Other places in town -- profit-oriented businesses all -- seem to manage that better.

We were there at a sunny and hot Sunday afternoon and had a really good time. We only got one new beer from their tap list, what a pity. Hoped the selection would be bigger. Prices were quite high, especially for the bottled beers. Service was very fast, very friendly and also very child-welcoming. Would come back.

Best place for beer in Hamburg. From their brewerey (next door) they have 10+ beers (8 taps + bottles, including ones in the bottle shop) most of which are real good. In addition to that add great food, nice atmosphere & superrior beer store with cool stuff all around the world. Definite not-to-miss place!
