Classy upscale joint, usually jam-packed, great atmosphere, short but decent beer list. Did not try the food.

This is one of the first craft beer bars/restaurants in all of Germany, established by the Ratsherrn Brauerei five years ago, and it continues to be one of the best. The beer experience is immersive, as the brewery is right next door (offering tours), as is their craft beer store, with a real good, albeit pricey, selection of international and German brews. Limited Ratsherrn editions will be sold here, not necessarily in supermarkets. The Braugasthof is well thought-through, with a multi-level layout, great ambience (if a bit on the dark side - but there’s a fireplace!), a large patio and very good food. Dishes are classics with a twist, there’s also snacks like a basket of bread, which is baked on-site. The big bar sits in the middle of the place, it has a chilled iron plate running around the length of it, to keep your beer cool. Nice touch. Tap selection is mainly Ratsherrn, with a couple of German brews added (Schneider Weisse) and one or two guest beers from abroad. They recently had a Mikkeller on, now there’s a Polish Black Wit. With their own micro-brewery being able to crank out at least two new beers every month, this is the place to taste them. Some of them never see a bottle. Their IPA is actually pretty good, they also put out a quadrupel this year. Service can be hit and miss - depending on who you’re talking to, knowledge of the specials on tap can be sketchy or even non-existent, at other times you get a whole sermon on tastes and styles. The bottle selection is good and ordered by style. Prices are way on the high side, though. 6,30 for a big one is borderline ridiculous, guest beers are so expensive that your wallet will be drained before you get drunk. However, patrons seem to be willing to pay - the place is always packed. With special annual events like the Bock Beer Day and Craft Beer Days that attract brewers from wide and far, this is still Hamburgs go-to place when it comes to beers out of the ordinary. But other beer-minded places are starting to gain popularity, so beware, Altes Mädchen.

12th Dec 2014. Impressive set up with loads of their own (Ratsherrn) beers on tap and in bottles: good quality guest beers too, but very pricey. Modern, slick and neat, with plenty of space and different seating areas in varying styles and heights. Huge patio area outside too. friendly staff, but busy preparing for Christmas functions on our visit. 5 beer tasting trays of house beers is worth trying before hitting the guests. We also ate a couple of their mid-day specials, the wife a salad, be a chilli: both excellent in taste, amount and cost. Well worth leaving the city centre and finding if you have a few spare hours while in Hamburg.

Can be very packed!!! Location looks nice built mainly by wooden palletts. Offers a good beer menu card and offers several craft beers on tap and more in bottles. Good selection but prices vary and can be ridiculously high! Food is served but I did not have any. Overall a good place and close to the craft beer store to have a break before checking in or out...

Visited late 11/2014. Well tucked away roomy Braugasthof 2.0 in the redbrick Schanzenhöfe. Dimly lit, with a bit of that newly renovated chilly atmosphere, the only real bustle going on at the bar tap. Varying service depending on which student server was rushed through which Beer 101 training: guest tap Mikkeller was not on the blackboard and offered as "some Danish beer called Micky". Otherwise mostly Ratsherrn and affiliated Brewers&Union beers on tap - the new house IPA was surprisingly tasty. Upscale bottle list, exaggerated in the case of quite a few very basic US classics like Boston lager and Anchor Porter which I have never seen offered for more than €8/bottle or 4 times the retailed import price. Lambiek offered is entry-level sugared St. Louis and Lindemans, set to serve the stereotype instead of the wealth of the underlying beer culture. A bottle of (granted: ahrd to come by) Leipziger Gose at €6,90 is a bit of a bankbreaker as well, in its land of origin. Kitchen closes at, so barely managed to get hold of a last sweet pulled pork sandwich at quite a heavy ransom. Let’s say this impressive bobo factory for the new brew has potential once it sheds it reaches it ROI?

Fantastico locale, ben arredato con annesso beershop ben fornito. Il cibo è buono e c’è una buona selezione di birre, oltre a quelle prodotte. Prezzi abbastanza alti ma ne è valsa la pena.

Interesting brewpub, a bit hidden in the brick buildings ghetto. It’s a cosy place, although a bit too dark, specially when eating. Service is good, prices are on a higher level, but you can get a flight of 5 draught beers relatively cheap. Worth of visiting it everytime when in Hamburg...

Large and packed brewpub with the classic interior. Serves beers from Ratsherren (of course) but also a couple of beers from USA and Belgium. Food was a bit careless and overpriced. Excellent service.

Nice and cozy american inspired brewpub in St. Pauli. Easy reachable with metro as Sternchanze station is more or less next door. Lots of seating inside, a nice fireplace, and a nice big patio with its own bar in front.10 or so taps, some Ratsherrn house brew, some geusts from smaller local breweries, and Anchor Steam beer, all served nice and fresh. 50 or so bottles, Brewdog, Brooklyn, Black isle, Århus!, etc. Possible to order a smapler of the 5 Ratsherrn beers. Even though half empty service was a little slow, forgot to give me the promissed log-in for the wifi. On the other hand our waiter offered me free samples of the 2 or 3 beers i havent had. Didnt eat, but menu looked promissing, fresh bread baked on site. A little pricy compared to other places in Hamburg. Will return if in Hamburg again.

So, rock up having heard loads about this place, friends saying "you have to go..." arrived, incredibly warm evening. Sat on the pallet wood tables (cool, will be making some). 10 Mins later, still no sign of a service staff member. Admire what is probably a very expensive bit of kit in their brewery. Still no sign of staff. Mid Evening. 9pm. 10mins later, go and get menu. 10 mins later no staff. 10 mins later, go an order at bar. 20 mins still no sign of beer. Leave. shame. Should be world class.
