(Visited 10/2013); Anvil is located in the Neartown section of downtown Houston on Westheimer Road. There is a small parking lot next to the building.
The inside of the brick building features a bar on the left side and seating opposite, with large windows offering a view outside. The decor is kind of spartan, with minimal decor on the brick walls. Wooden stools at the bar, and a couple plush couch seats as well as booths and tables. Behind the bar are a couple boards listing the beers and cocktail specials. Shelves of liquor behind the bar as well.
The bar features 10 taps, with Texas breweries like Karbach, Lone Pint and Buffalo Bayou. They also have a house made ginger ale that I thought was delicious. The place definitely has a focus on cocktails though and I have to admit that after my first beer I got sucked in to trying a couple different ones and they were great.
Service at the bar was very good throughout my visit. The bartenders/mixologists know the beer well enough and were friendly and made good recommendations.
I did not have any food on my visit.
Overall this place is not a beer bar per se, but has enough worthwhile options to warrant a visit.

This is the place a beer lover can go when you have to go out with non-beer lovers. This is definitely more of a mixed drinks bar than a beer hangout as the mixed drink volume here is pretty high. They typically have 3-5 decent beers on tap including a cask and a few other questionable selections. They are definitely bold in their selections and seemingly go in a different direction everytime I am there (i.e. not carrying any IPAs, multiple sour beers, etc.). They always seem to have a beer or two on the list that I have not even heard of. Their food is okay and the prices a little high, and parking can be difficult as they are right on Westheimer. This place is worth checking out, but not a serious beer bar.

A nice bar that is known for its cocktails but has a nice tap list to boot. While not huge, they tend to get in some harder to find beers. Can be loud and service can be slow when it is busy. Food is ok, but overall everything is pricing. I think there are better places in Houston, but worth a stop especially if you know someone who likes cocktails.

This might be my favorite bar in Houston. While it focuses mainly on cocktails, there are also 10 taps which focus almost exclusively on Texas beers. During a recent trip there was a special one-off cask from Karbach, as well as some other solid beers. The cocktails are very nice and the food is also very good. Just down the road (within easy walking distance) from the Hay Merchant so you can hit both in one night. My only compliant is that the prices are a little bit too high for my liking.

Great location for unusual local brews (Southern Star, Live Oak, etc.) Limited but tasty food menu. Service can be slow when itís crowded since their focus is time consuming cocktails but the bartenders are all knowledgeable and passionate about fine drinking.

Visited on a Thursday evening. Nice upscale atmosphere with friendly and knowledgeable (about mixology mostly, but some beer knowledge) staff. 10 or so regular taps, one nitro and one cask. Some food/small plates. Definitely a cocktail bar over a beer bar. Of the 12 beer offerings, 10 were from TX and the other two were Left Hand Milk Stout on nitro and Deschutes Jubelale. Beer wise they had Black Metal on cask, several 512 offerings, SS Buried Hatchet, a Karabach (sp?) beer, and a No Label Black Wit. Cocktails were creative. I had the Brave among others (thanks Kevin). Enjoyable place. Beer prices are around $7 per glass. Street or Valet parking.

Certainly has a nice ambiance, but the selection is not very extensive, though they tend to have rare or special things, and sometimes things are a bit over priced. Overall itís a nice place if you want to feel hip and cool.

First off this is a cocktail bar. A really great little cocktail bar and if this was ratecocktail and not ratebeer iíd give it a 90+.
The beer selection is hardly an after thought. They have a rotating selection of more than 10 high quality craft beers and they have a cask.
Great little spot.
