Surprised I hadnít rated... went 3 times on a week trip to Portland. The list is fantastic for an east coaster (and Iíd assume generally). Russian Rivers, one-offs, seasonals, all the locals - never got a chance to explore the bottles - but didnít need to with the tap list. Cash only, but no biggie. The bartenders were a bit standoffish at first, but talked it up after a bit. Knew their shit. Big wide open setup was never crowded when I visited. Got tacos next door and sat out on a picnic bench drinking amazing brew. Worth itís reputation.

Fantastic. Just fantastic. The selection was amazing, with prices that were hard to believe. Cash only, so be prepared, but at $3 for a world class pint it is a small price to pay (get it? GET IT?) Would love to see this place with warmer weather and the huge patio area opened up. A highlight on an already amazing beer tour of Portland.

Iím going against the grain here, but my call would be that the best thing about this bar is that they are across the street from the Beer Monger. Obviously this place serves a lot of world class beer, as observed in the availability list. But today, IMHO, the Beer Monger makes better use of 8 taps than these guys do of 50. Long narrow beer bar, like an (slightly) upscale Toronado. Throbbing bass which inaudible treble. Pinball machines are cool. Younger crowd than at any of my other Portland stops. Service is friendly if a bit slow at the bar. No food.

Cash only is the only real issue with the place. Otherwise brilliant tap list, very diverse and at good prices. Deep bottle list and vintage bottle list. Some of the bottles are on the expensive side and some are very reasonable. Walked out with a 2009 Bourbon Old Stock for $40 and was thrilled with the price.
Good service and chill atmosphere. Bet the place is bonkers in the summer with the huge outdoor area.

I walked in with a friend, sat down, and ordered a Pliny the Elder. Led Zeppelin was on the sound system. It was a good place to spend an hour or so talking. The place has a long bar with 60 beers on tap, an excellent selection of some awesome beers. Picnic table seating, inside and out. The tap list is alphabetized and overhead on several large monitors, so it was easy to see the beer name, brewery, serving size and price, brewery location, and ABV. The current taplist is online, as well, so you can plan a visit if youíre looking for something in particular. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Vintage and rare bottles to take home. A great place to visit and come back to.

So I canít say enough good things about this place even if it was sorta random when we stopped in walking back from pok pok. It was the last day of there embrace the dark event and it was one of the, if not the best, tap lists Iíve ever had the pleasure drinking from. Got to try Moscow, a bunch of evil twin stouts, various west coast limited ba beers, some 2011 consecration and various iipas. I love the serving sizes because you get to try many different things and although they are generally 4-6 bucks a pop consisting the rarity of the beers it not a bad deal. The server behind the bar was great and quite friendly, there is a pretty stellar bottle selection to stay or go, and itís an awesome place to hang out although itís not for everyone as had been described by many. Also have to say they sure do support biking considering lots of space to park them and helmet racks.

The equivalent of sorts to Baileys Taproom, but on the Eastside. Great location near the food truck tent city, Lardo, and Double Dragon Banh Mi (do not miss this restaurant across the street!). Toronado-eque interior that is divey with a mega bottle collection and stickers everywhere. Positions itself as the original craft beer bar in Portland, but Iím told it isnít that old. Bottle list is extensive with a lot of hard to find stuff, marked up a pretty decent amount. To give an example, we found Firestone Walker on the bottle list here for $45. It was $30 at Brouwers Cafe in Seattle. They did have De la Seen Band of Brothers on tap, but it wasnít fresh. Boneyard Notorious was also on tap, but the pour of this beer was like 6oz and full price. A bit miffed about that. Cash only is a big annoyance, but there is an ATM inside with a fee. Server was pretty nice. Overall, I was a bigger fan of Baileys. Still, this is the only place I saw anywhere in Portland that had an Upright Sole Composition bottle for sale (M&M, OP sour stout).

A formidable bottle list, a fantastic tap list thatís always changing, plenty of seating, and great pleasant staff. Thereís also pinball. And graffiti. And death metal, and gangster rap. Not exactly for everyone, but truly great for those in the demographic.
Thereís a big outdoor seating area with picnic tables lined up hofbrau style. There are two big roll-up garage doors that join this space with half a dozen highboys inside. You can sit outside even at night after the doors are closed.
There are about 30 beers pouring, and a few hundred more in bottles behind the bar. Iím 90% sure you can take bottles to go, and get growlers filled, though we did neither of those things this weekend. Everything is well-chosen, with an emphasis on local stuff for the faucets, and things from everywhere (tons and tons of European beers) in bottles.
Cash only. Keep this in mind. Thereís a very slow ATM by the door.
The setting is kinda crazy. The furniture is new, and nice enough. The bar, taps, coolers, and washing stations are all very new and very nice. But the bathrooms feel kinda ancient, not least because they are covered with graffiti. The floor is mostly concrete, with a little plywood here and there. Something of a hodgepodge. You walk in through a little vestibule with four pinball machines, which change occasionally and are all well-chosen for being incredibly fun to play. You can blow through a lot of quarters here with your tipple.
We hit this place twice in two days, and went through a bunch of bottles, a bunch of pints, dozens upon dozens of tasting glasses for shares, and a few bar towels, too. We had fun talking to the staff, and fun playing pinball. The beers were fantastic, and it was so fun to get our hands on them. Just about everything we cracked is something we canít get in WA. Definitely be back here every time weíre in Portland.

Canít knock the selection here. Actually, you canít really dislike APEX period. Exciting tap choice to satisfy the thirsts of even the staunchest beer geek. Shame it was rained out and couldnít enjoy drinking on the patio. Next time...
