60 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 10/20 Beav42 (5) | March 13, 2013 I’m sorry, but a brewpub needs to have at least one or two "go to" beers for me to endorse it any higher than this. Beers tend toward bland and thin, and while they try a lot of interesting styles here, the results generally fall short of the mark. Perfect example--I attended their beer fest, but tasted none of ABC’s beers. Not a conscious decision, just how it played out. I did try most of the homebrew club’s beers that were there, though. | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 orangesol (80) Pennsylvania | January 28, 2013 I have been here plenty of times, I have no idea why I haven’t reviewed this place yet, that changes now.
Parking can be tough if there is a concert going on at the abbey bar. Once you enter you are greeted by a huge dining room with lots of tables all over the space. The brewery can be seen through the wall on the right, with all different countries flags all over the walls. Toward the back of the room is the large curved bar with plenty of seats. TV’s and the draft list hangs on the wall behind the bar. They usually have quite a few of there own beers on at all times. I always like to check what is on cask first, they are usually much better...I will say that they really do have a great variety of house beers, but some of them need some tweaks to compare to other local brewery standards.
I really enjoy there food. I have liked nearly everything I have tried, recent favorites include the Poutine and the switchback burger. The quality has always been pretty good. I do know quite a few people who have not been as lucky as I have, pieces of seafood shells in the cheddar soup comes to mind.
The abbey bar may be even better than the downstairs area. They have most of the same beers on-tap but they also have quite a few belgian beers. It is always nice to get a saison dupont and sit outside on the deck in the summer. They always have bands playing up in the abbey, it really is one of the best places to see a show in the area. Overall ABC is definitely worth the stop if you are in the area. | 76 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 13/20 Schlenkerla (208) , Austria | December 31, 2012 Although the beers are not outstanding, I like this place. Best is the onion/cheese soup. Large variety of home brewed beers, nice atmosphere. | 86 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 18/20 Rotbart (4) , | December 27, 2012 Nice, bright atmosphere with a great looking bar. Friendly neighborhood type setting with a fabulous beer selection. Good food and good service. I can’t wait to go back. | 70 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 15/20 JulienHuxley (133) Trois-Rivieres, Quebec | August 28, 2012 Visited on a Tuesday evening. Had dinner there, atmosphere was quiet but nice, food was good, prices were decent, especially on the beer. You can get a 54 oz flight of tasters for ten bucks. Service was good, restaurant style. The beers aren’t incredible but drinkable. Good place. | 72 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 5/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 14/20 crager013 (4) Carlisle, Pennsylvania | May 22, 2012 Consistent beers brewed here. Service could be better, staff turn over seems high. It’s the coolest building and the brew works are beautiful. Great bands and entertainment and the Belgium Bar upstairs has a good selection. Brewed root beer for the kids is a hit as well. | 82 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 thunderhops (20) Vermont | May 9, 2012 Harrisburg location very cool good food and selection of beers location on Cameron iffy neighborhood not good parking | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 14/20 BeerandBlues2 (460) Hanover, Maryland | February 11, 2012 Appalachian now operates 4 brew pubs in the Harrisburg area. This one is in downtown Harrisburg, just outside a real shady area of town, if there is a non-shady side of this wretched place. At any rate, the brewery is housed inside a historic building and is very open, though somewhat noisy. The service was good, but I wish I were offered the ability to choose the beers in my sampler instead of getting the first 8 on the board. There were at least 15 house beers on draft!! The prices were good and no food was consumed here, so that you will have to figure out yourself. | 84 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 5/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 15/20 matty (2) Camp Hill, Pennsylvania | January 13, 2012 Used to go to this place all the time with my wife. We were in the mug club and loved it. Haven’t had the time to go lately. Historic building in downtown Harrisburg. Old fire hall with the original cobblestone floor and heavy wooden exposed timbers. There is a little historic case of Harrisburg brewing memoribilia tucked in the corner. Large windows enable a view into the ground floor brewing area behind the very long wood-top bar. Nice dark atmosphere, but not dreary. Food is typical bar food with a few "upper" dishes. Wings aren’t bad. Upstairs has a Belgian bar with many outside brewery selections, which is different for a brewpub. There is also a stage on the second floor which can house smaller national acts. I have been surprised at who they’ve pulled in. St. Patrick’s Day is great - the Irish bands and Ceili dancers are awesome! Oktoberfest is fun too. Overall, it’s a nice brewpub and worth the visit. | 52 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 1/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD 1/10 VALUE 4/10 OVERALL 11/20 maltiness (7) Harrisburg, Pennsylvania | December 8, 2011 Love the ambiance, too bad the food, service and beer are unimpressive. I try to go at least once a year to give it another try and am always disappointed. |
