Right, I don’t think I’ve ever been to a large supermarket with a beer selection as huge as this. Basically, the Auchan chain plays the role of beer specialty shops in Romania. A couple hundred beers (300 seems to be a conservative estimate), both Romanian and imports. And the prices for Belgian and English imports are the lowest I’ve ever seen, I think. Bought myself a couple dozens and headed for the beach, yay!

Huge supermarket with one aile dedicated to beer. You have to realy search for the Romanian beers, there are a few. Many fruit beers which seem to be popular in Eastern Europe. Found some 10 new beers, which is perfect. Many import beers. Not expensive at all.

IMPORTANT NOTE: There is not really any way to make the address exactly point to the exact place. Auchan is located in the big Titan mall close to the address that googlemap will lead you to. You can’t miss it, just look for the large parking lot. Now on to the rating… In Romania the concept of a beer store is pretty much nonexistent. Locals from Bucharest told me the this place has the largest beer selection they had ever seen in the country. They are probably right. Located in the Titan mall, Auchan is basically a Romanian Wal-Mart type of store (grocery store, hardware store, sports gear store, beer store, everything store) with a large section dedicated to beer. Maybe 150 different beers or so, this is quite an impressive number for Romania. You’ll find your classics (Trappe, Sam Adams, Leffe, Wychwood Hobgoblin, Paulaner, Weihenstephaner), some lesser known Belgian ales (Waterloo Double 8 Dark, others…), some less common English beers (Marstons Burton Bitter, etc…), and quite a few lesser known French beers. My pictures of the shelves show French beers like Ambre des Flandres, Septante 5 Ambrée, Septante 5 Blonde, Grain dOrge La Géante Authentique, St Landelin Mythique, more… I remember buying a Brakspear Oxford Gold and some safer bets, I didn’t feel like any of those lesser known beers but I was very surprised at the number of new ratings I could have bought from this place. Oh, and if you are into malt likka, holy shit, they’ve got stuff there that you can buy in 4L plastic bottles for less than $1, knock yourself out.
