One of the the best beer gardens in the world; huge; great Augustiner Edelstoff in the barrel; did not eat; but food looked tasty; within walking distance from the train station;

Visited September 2012 with chinoskillzian.
This was a Monday afternoon and we were pretty tired. We were slightly primed by the half liter ticks at Lowenbrau shortly before this stop but ya see, we flew Ryanair from "Stockholm" to "Munich/Memmingem". Getting to the "Stockholm"/Skavsta airport requires taking a bus about 70 minutes east of the city through the forests and over the hills to an airport that consists of 3 gates and a cafeteria that serves beer at all hours. Memmingen is equally ridiculous and not at all near the city it advertises to be near. 110 km away. Iím pretty sure this is privately owned and just a piece of some farmers corn field. No fence surrounding the place, just some fields, a small terminal, and a low approach vector coming very close to the barn. 3 hours total driving and 2 hours flying. This was all after not sleeping since we decided to tick another couple dozen pale lagers in the hotel room in Stockholm before the bus left.
So a couple of weary travelers walk into a bar and are directed down into the basement which goes down a couple stories. All brick, high arched ceilings, and some nice artwork as well as a huge barrel that has been cut out to include a table and some seating. Very cool. Service was a bit slow, actually it was very slow, but once they came we got all the drinks and food we could handle. I would definitely bring people here to hang out. Outside would be nice too but it was raining. They have some booths and tables and lighting. The food is good but typical "traditional" German food and the beer was of course good. The food was fairly reasonably priced too.
This happened to be very close to where they hold the Oktoberfest celebration which was evidenced by the low line of drunk Americans stumbling down the sidewalk. Naturally this was the next destination.

Absolutely stunning outdoor biergarten. I only had a brief look inside but it looked very nice, too. Classic Munich feel to it. The outside is where you should sit, though. Beautiful old trees help set itself off from the city around it. Iím sure they would provide a bit of cooling affect in the summer- as they did in the fall when I visited. The food was very nice- my wife and I split the potato salad and a big pretzel, our friends had proper meals that looked delicious. The dunkle was outstanding, as always- so was the edelstoff. Such a great place to have a couple of beers. Was our last place in Munich before our vacation ended and couldnít have picked a better stop.

This is the place to go for events. ESEH held their closing reception here. Endless food (schweinehaxe!) endless beers, and a bavarian band that wasnít afraid to rock Credence. Awesome ambiance too.

I spendt the best part of Saturday here and was not disappointed. Excellent beer and food accompanied with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Sadly inclement weather stopped any outdoor drinking.

Cruised in here with a stiff hangover and left some hours later without one. Partly due to the excellent pork knuckle they serve and partly to the litre after litre of fine German beer. The place is massive with an enormous outdoor area. It was pure pishing it down though so we spent our time indoors. A giant school hall with long tables and heraldry painted on the ceiling. Very enjoyable and rammed with Munchen fans on the night of the German cup final. They have a cinema screen at the end of the hall which intended on showing it. Good beer, great food, great atmosphere.

Many years since Ive visited but looking through old pictures from the trip brought back great memories. The food was great (best pretzels ive ever had) and the beer was awesome! Feels a little more authentic and less touristy than the Hofbrauhaus. I really loved the outdoor seating in a courtyard like setting!
