62 AMBIANCE 2/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 13/20
Visited in januar 2012 on our pre-winter-ale-pubcrawl..
Not a traditionel pub, seems more as a mix of a pubæic eating place and a place for the students to hang out. But with 7 handpumps with well served beers it´s for sure a place worth visiting :-)

Not every pub can be a Victorian gem (although many in Liverpool are) and the Augustus John certainly doesn’t fit into that category. It’s in a characterless concrete precinct, part of the University of Liverpool campus at the top of Brownlow Hill, and outwardly it doesn’t look at all promising. We’d tried to visit once before, during term time, but were put off by the steamed up windows and the heaving masses spilling from the door. On a quiet Monday evening in January though, presumably before the start of term, it was surprisingly relaxed, reasonably pleasant and not nearly as soulless as it could have been.
There was an interesting choice of beers from seven hand pumps (although, this being the end of the Christmas holidays, only four or five were in use), an even more interesting range of pump clips and seven keg taps of standard swill.
The service was friendly and the barman obviously takes pride in his beers and enjoys introducing his clients to something different.
