This was the rudest and most unpleasant stop on our tour, and the beer was not so good either. I would give it a miss given how many other nicer spots there are..

Visited in July 2009 and again September 2012.
In 2009 we spent about 2 minutes here. We were walking through the old town and trying some kolsch beers as well as site seeing. We walked in here around 4pm and looked for an open table. A few seconds later someone came by to tell us that we couldn’t stay here unless we wanted to eat as well. We said we just wanted a beer and the guy got rude and demanded that we make room for dining customers. There were plenty of open tables. Whatever. Sroll vorbei.
2012: This was one of the very early stops of the day. In fact this may have been the first. We got the same table that I was trying to get on my first visit. This time however, since it was still before lunch time, we got service and they were even friendly. They also had several beers that were not a kolsch as well and they weren’t as upset that we tried to order a non-kolsch as the people were in Dusseldorf. My first experience left a bad taste in my mouth but the second was pleasant.

Nice ambiance. I was lucky that they had the bock at this time of year

Hard to rate selection. They had a Weissbier along with their Kolsch when I went. Nice atmosphere, a nice tasting Kolsch, plus a weizen and bock, rare in these parts. A must stop in Cologne.

Inside looks cozy and typically decored, but we sat outside in the small biergarten. WHile the front looks (is?) old, the back place doesn’t. Not a problem though. Speedy service, almost ’American’ even. The Kolsch is not the best but drinks well. The food is, well, weird. Tasty ingredients but odd or een bizarre compbinations. Fruit everywhere and quite salty and creamy. The special mushrooms were great though - yeah a bit mixed feelings. Not the cheapest place eather but okay. I’d suggest stopping for a glass (which isn’t kept on your coaster, here) but then continue your journey. No payment with cards here, only cash! And you have to pay for the toilets. :(

Had a few beers here, definitely more of a tourist place, but still a cool building. Service was not the best, there was some neglect. They had the Kolsch which didn’t taste as good as the same beer at other places, also had a Bock which was ok. Might be worth checking out but not a priority.

An interesting little bar in the tourist zone, so not cheap and personally their Kolsch does not stand upto the similarly-named Paffgen. However I think this is the only outlet to sell Pfaffen so worth a visit even if just to admire the interior.

Visited on Friday 26/04/13 late evening.
Trad bar in terms of decor, large wooden tables, pictures on the wall.
Place was packed but we baged a table for 5. Turnover of tables seemed pretty rapid here so don’t be put off if it appears overly busy.
Service was very prompt and efficient.
2 beers on, Kolsch and a seasonal.
Good vibe, packed largely with locals and some tourists.
Right next to Gilden Im Zims (if the tossers aren’t trying to shut you out!) and close to Malzmuhle.

Hier muss man bei einem Kölnbesuch vorbeischauen, und zwar wegen des Bieres. Liegt auch zentral, also kein Umweg.

Cool little place just off the square. Friendly atmosphere, fair amount of seating inside, and pretty decent Kolsch. They also had a hefeweizen available in bottles and make a bock (not available when I was there).
