We visited here on both Tuesday 30th September and again on Wednesday 1st October 2014. It is not difficult to see why this pub is the top rated place in Newcastle, it is very good, though maybe not quite my favourite. Its a large and spacious place inside a big central horseshoe shaped bar, unsurpisingly draws you in like a magnet. The beers are listed ahead and up high in front of you as you enter. Comfy seats aplenty, a good spot for people watching perhaps. It is a good layout meaning getting to the bar and getting served is not a difficult task, though we did visit at quieter times so not sure what it would be like on a Fri or Sat night. The pub is near many other great bars such as Bierrex, DATbar, Lady Greys. Beer choice very good with a seemingly similar ratio of Cask & Keg. Service was good, a friendly place, really liked it here. The Indian restaurant smack opposite was also very good.

A fairly spacious bar with a modern interior. The beer range is very impressive with several guest beers in both cask and keg form. Aside from beers from the north east, you often see beers from Scotland.

Nice decor and a comfortable place to sit with a quiet pint. Service was pleasant and selection was pretty good. Some kegs, ale and bottles. Food was mediocre at best. Prices were decent. A very nice upscale pub with a good beer list.

You can’t really fault this place for its range of beers. There are plenty of hand pumps, interesting craft beers on keg and a good selection of bottles. Nice food and décor too. It could live with a few more seats though.

We visited Bacchus on Friday evening, so it was unsurprisingly rammed. Even so we had a good time. It’s actually quite a large place, with the bar near the centre of the room. They carry a fairly impressive selection on keg, cask & bottle. There were 7/8 cask ales on including 3 new to RB and not all bitters/golden ales at that! They also had about 12 "craft" keg lines, which on our visit included Beavertown, Tempest, Marble & Anarchy and a fairly wide bottle selection to boot. Plenty of good beer to keep you coming back, but it lacks the ambience of a few other pubs in Newcastle. Definitely a must-visit if you’re in ’toon.

Usually visit this place on a night in town. Always busy, good selection usually with something interesting. Efficient service, can be a bit pricey. Another one of those pubs I only seem to visit in company.

Keeps one of best beer selections in the whole country, on a huge wrap-around bar with amirror back and wood panel bar tops. Large and spacious and great with rare hand pumps, equally exotic (and mostly big ABV) beers on keg, and lots of bottles too. The selection has depth and breadth, with session ales, IPAs, barley wines and all in between. And right around the corner from Lady Grey. Newcastle continues to impress!

I visited this place right after watching Chelsea throw 3 points away against Newcastle. The pub was absolutely rammed, which makes it difficult to give this place a proper rating. The bar appears to be pretty upscale. The selection might be large, but it was difficult to learn exactly what was on offer. A menu would help, especially when the pub’s so full that you can’t see all the taps and bottles. What I did see was a mixed bag. The cask stuff was fairly traditional. Plenty of local twiggy stuff. The keg options were all over the place. For example, they had n’ice chouffe on right next to a macro lager. Most of the crowd was drinking swill that you could buy at any bar. The service was fine, the prices were fair. Overall, this was something of a frustrating experience. The pub was way too crowded, there was no way for me to check out the selection. I sank a half then got the hell out of there.

A wonderful beer haven just a couple of minutes walk from the city centre. I was in on a fairly quiet Tuesday afternoon and they still had 7 cask handpumps on the go as well as (at an estimate) 10 craft keg fonts. Lots of great British breweries represented on keg (Tempest, Summer Wine, and Tiny Rebel amongst others) as well as a good selection of locals on cask. A few Scandinavian offerings on tap too from Mikkeller & Haandbryggeriet which is good to see.
Decent bottle list with a good selection of Belgian, UK, and Scandinavian brews as well as a few US offerings from the likes of Flying Dog and Goose Island.
Prices not too bad at all given the quality. Tremendous range of glassware too which is nice to see.
Service is top notch, the girl behind the bar when I was in was just lovely - so pleasant & full of knowledge.
More of an upscale ambiance - leather and dark wood rather than spit and sawdust. Nice relaxed buzz even on a quiet weekday afternoon. One of the best (if not the best) beer bars in the North East.
