86 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 18/20 jmm635 (82) Havertown, Pennsylvania | October 25, 2012 Really cool pub across the street from Half Acre Brewery. After a nice tour at Half Acre I stopped in for a late lunch and was seated immediately on a Saturday. Friendly and prompt service. Very nice tap list full of local options and quite an extensive bottle list. The food was superb! Tons of burger options and all of them sounded ridiculously good. Of the three people I had lunch with, none were disappointed with their burger selection. DO NOT MISS the fried cheese curds!!! | 84 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 fluffheady (46) Chicago, Illinois | July 19, 2012| Updated April 9, 2013 This place is pretty much across the street from Half Acre. They have a really great draft list. Their menu theme is about 20 different burgers (there’s other things on the menu too). Food is really delicious. Drafts are great and in constant rotation. Really cool art in sculptures and painted all over the wall. Absolutely worth a visit. And if you’re in from out of town, hit Half Acre Brewery and then come here for a burger. We had a really weird service moment once. The pour sizes weren’t listed very clearly. Our beer came out in a 12 oz tulip and it was half full. I felt like I was getting shorted. After looking back at the menu we found the pour sizes. We asked the bartender about it and he said "they don’t make glasses that size". Huh...? Other than an awkward misunderstanding, this place has always been pretty cool. | 82 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 14/20 dinkle50 (54) Chicago, Illinois | June 23, 2012| Updated April 9, 2013 Went here on a lazy Saturday afternoon for some food and a couple rounds. Huge selection in bottles. The draft list was big too. Service was fine. The food wasn’t anything earth shattering, but it was just fine. I’ll be back for sure. | 82 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 17/20 msante79 (335) Mount Prospect, Illinois | May 10, 2012| Updated April 9, 2013 Stopped in right after they opened on Sunday after running a race with my wife. Sat right at the bar. Very nice tap selection filled with some regional brews and a few one offs and special releases. Had the goat cheese fondue which was very good. Had a burger which was good, but thought it would be better given their reputation of having some the best burgers in the city. Staff was knowledgeable. Definitely worth a stop and I will be back. | 80 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 16/20 nbondi (41) Chicago, Illinois | April 30, 2012| Updated April 9, 2013 More restaurant than bar, the food has always been very good. Think upscale pub food, very good burgers, and excellent fried cheese. Often changing very good tap list featuring a mix of American and import micros. Generally chill feel at the bar. This place does everything just a little bit better than others in the game. | 100 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 20/20 Jeffervon (3) Illinois | March 13, 2012| Updated April 9, 2013 I have had an extraordinary fondness for this corner bar/restaurant since the very first experience. The beer list is always changing and surprises often appear. I will forever love the Bad Apple, my first visit the place had KBS on tap, HOLY SHIT! I thought I was dreaming. The burgers are second to NONE. Go and eat and drink for yourselves, you will see what it is all about. LUV THIS PLACE! | 86 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 18/20 justinwmaynard (10) Chicago, Illinois | January 28, 2012| Updated April 9, 2013 Bad Apple is a nice bar, with an excellent selection of local craft beers. They were one of the first local bars to carry Two Brothers and Half Acre beer, respect! | 84 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 17/20 brian60625 (4) Illinois | January 19, 2012 One of the best (if not THE best) places to have a beer and a meal in Chicago. They’ve really hit all the right spots here: creative food choices, wide range of beers -also available in sampler sizes- on tap, cool yet unpretentious bar staff, and finally, the place has a nice vibe, not cookie-cutter-blah like many pubs jumping on the craft beer bandwagon these days. And bonus points: (1) shuffleboard! (2) across the street from Half Acre. In short: my favorite beer bar in the city. | 82 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 Newk (32) , | October 18, 2011 Bad Apple is a fun place to go. It’s never too hard to get a seat and people are pretty easy going.
The bartenders are always to get a hold of when needing a beer. They have a couple of different drafts and about 15-20 different beers on tap at any time along with a pretty deep bottle list.
The prices aren’t that bad and the selection is what keeps me coming back | 90 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 17/20 cratez (151) Toronto, Ontario | September 11, 2011 The final beer bar that my girl and I visited on a recent trip to Chicago. We popped over after grabbing brews at Half Acre and were not disappointed.
VIBE: nice low-key atmosphere in the daytime, a large bar greets you at the door with cozy tables and booths off to the side and another room in the back. Lots of light coming in through the windows, patrons mind their own business. Awesome neighbourhood joint.
SERVICE: our waitress was cool as hell. I explained that I wanted to try some beers but I was driving back to Canada and didn’t want to get blasted. She gave me four 2-ounce draught samples free of charge (score!). Food came to the table quickly and the server left us alone while we ate. High marks here.
SELECTION: I had a Lagunitas Lucky 13, Mikkeller Single Hop Warrior IPA, Left Hand Good Juju Ginger, and Mikkeller Single Hop Simcoe IPA on tap. Other draughts were Lindemans Pêche, Goose Island Sofie, and Founders Centennial IPA. My girlfriend enjoyed her glass of wine. Similar to Local Option, I didn’t bother looking at the bottle list since the taps were so impressive. Also, several pints were $4.00 or less.
FOOD: both of us went for the Turkey Jack sandwich on whole wheat bread with a side of french fries. It was flavourful and reasonably priced and the huge portion filled us up for the long trek back home. We were very satisfied with the drinks and fare.
OVERALL: Bad Apple is an outstanding gastropub that we would return to time and again if we lived in the area. This overlooked gem was the unexpected sleeper hit of our Chicago beer bar tour. A solid spot all around. |
