92 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 19/20 Drake (392) Ivy, Virginia | December 23, 2012 This place has come a long way since opening. Good beer selection, weekly tastings, some glassware starting to creep in, a nice bar that features a few macros but also several nice beers. They will often get rarer things such as Starr Hill one-offs and the more rare draft offerings that come to the state. Food is tasty with a natural emphasis. This is a beer store, bar and cafe all at once. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area. I mean, how many beer stores do you know of that serve breakfast? There are rumors of expansion plans in the future. If they’re not careful, they just might end up becoming one of the state’s premier beer stops. The service is friendly and helpful to stangers but if you’re fortunate enough to get to know them, the service is that much better. I know I’ve walked in and found a rare beer in my hand before I knew what happened. Locals should come here and should do so repeatedly. Visitors should come here too as its one of the premiere stops in the area. The parking sucks. Other than that, this is a top notch place.
Update: as of November 2011, they have a whole new room for beer. The new room is the foreign beer selection and the original room is the American beer selection. It’s still a work in progress, but its already looking nice and should add to the already very nice bottle selection. | 90 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 18/20 Butters (168) Richmond, Virginia | December 11, 2008| Updated July 6, 2011 Definitely my favorite place Ive come across in Charlottesville thus far. Very nice selection of bottle beers and a tap line-up that is nothing to thumb your nose at. They must have some connections cause they had a few of the rarer beer that ive seen {brooklyn flemish gold and southern tier reserves} The staff is a young hip crowd but they sure do appreciate their beers. One guy, I believe his name was Josh?, even taught a beer class seminar over at UVA. I love the fact that I can get my wife to go out here in the am so she can drink coffee and I can have a brew. Very awesome concept. Update: Have come back here several times, and I love it more and more. Have had several very rare beers and always have something cool in bottles to go. Love this joint. | 90 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 DrSilverworm (30) Cincinnati, Ohio | September 5, 2012| Updated July 6, 2011 Was blown away by this, totally my kind of beer store. Lots of fresh beer on the shelves for reasonable prices, a good amount of it was available cold as singles, but not all of it. Tons of local stuff I can’t get here in Cincinnati, so I was very excited. If you get a case they give you a 5% discount, which is pretty awesome, so I ended up doing that. There is also a bar in the middle of the place with good stuff on tap, some rarities. Since the bar and the beer store is in the same area, you and your friends can enjoy drinks while you browse the to-go selection, which was very neat and unusual. On the opposite side of the bar, there is indoor seating area for the restaurant portion of the place, in addition to outdoor patio seating. My friends and I were very happy with the food. Bloody Mary’s were expensive at $9, but freakin’ great. Definitely tastes like a $9 BM. My friends went through 3. Service is pretty good, people who work there do their best to be as helpful as possible. Overall, a very satisfying place, one of the coolest beer stores I’ve ever been to. Ended up returning like 4-5 times throughout the labor day weekend. I look back on this place fondly, if I was a local I’d be there all the time. Totally my kind of thing. | 88 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 20/20 nbublick (11) , | October 1, 2011| Updated July 6, 2011 Nice selection of bottles. All bases covered. To go . To eat in. To drink in. | 88 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 18/20 Proteus93 (1) Charlottesville, Virginia | April 30, 2008| Updated July 6, 2011 Bright in the day (though not in the sense to hurt beers)... nice in the evenings when the lights go down. Great service, selection is good, if comparable to a couple other locations with the added bonus of the food, which is wonderful from somewhat limited experience. | 88 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 miguelblanco (5) Virginia | November 23, 2011| Updated July 6, 2011 Arrived with some friends in Late October 2011. Third time I’ve been here. Expanded Belgian selection is fantastic. Some rare beers, also the entire clown shoes collection, a ton of Bruery, Nonge O, local stuff like Williamsburg Alewerks and Blue Mountain. The tap list is usually very good - had a Fade to Black while beer shopping. Never had the food but I hear is pretty good. Overall a fantastic place to bottle shop - plenty of already chilled high-end ales. Great looking growlers too (wide grolsch-style caps). | 86 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 DiarmaidBHK (523) Pennsylvania | May 16, 2011 This is my kind of place. It’s like someone had a beer store and said to themselves. "Hey self, you know what would be really awesome. A bar right in the middle of my beer store!" And that’s pretty much the vibe. They have a nice patio on the outside. On the inside half of the space is for their beer store which is almost all craft beer split between regional, national ,and international brands, and the other half the bar and restaurant area. They had 13 good taps, a cask, and PBR although when I ordered it the bartender looked at my like I smacked her mother which was oddly comforting., They don’t do flights but you can buy beer in 10 ounce glasses. The food is mostly comfort food made with local and often organic ingredients and they have a special Sunday Brunch menu. (I really enjoyed the Allagash Fish Tacos.) If I lived in Charlottesville I would definitely be a regular at this place. Keep in mind they share a parking lot with the restaurant next door so parking can be scarce. Many people end up parking on the nearby street. | 86 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 15/20 magsinva (125) Virginia | May 16, 2011 What a great place! From talking to the bartender, the place started as a beer store that they decided to add a restaurant/bar in the middle! They have 15 craft beers on tap and PBR, though to be fair, if you actually order the pabst, they give you the "I’m worried for you sanity" look. This clearly shows that they care about their patrons, which is nice. The beer store has a great craft selection covering styles both foreign and domestic. They naturally do growlers and build your own sixers so you can take some of that cask beer that you had been enjoying home with you.The food is beer inspired comfort food (The egg white omelet was nice). | 86 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 19/20 Prometheus (23) Bamberg, Germany | October 10, 2010 Cool place. Ate outside, had a few beers. The food was local and definitely fresh. Then went inside and sampled a few. Nice selection, passable prices.
Definitely a great place to pick up a few brews in C-Ville. | 84 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 dpento1 (4) Virginia | April 22, 2010| Updated December 10, 2010 Parking here is an absolute nightmare if you go anytime after 5:00 (I should note I have never been before 5:00) Food is good, Bottle selection is great for C-ville, or most anywhere for that matter! Service/Staff are very friendly but a little slow. A perfect place to stop in with a few friends if you have a few minutes to have beer! I go every chance I get when I’m on that end of town. |
