86 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 DiarmaidBHK (523) Pennsylvania | May 16, 2011 This is my kind of place. It’s like someone had a beer store and said to themselves. "Hey self, you know what would be really awesome. A bar right in the middle of my beer store!" And that’s pretty much the vibe. They have a nice patio on the outside. On the inside half of the space is for their beer store which is almost all craft beer split between regional, national ,and international brands, and the other half the bar and restaurant area. They had 13 good taps, a cask, and PBR although when I ordered it the bartender looked at my like I smacked her mother which was oddly comforting., They don’t do flights but you can buy beer in 10 ounce glasses. The food is mostly comfort food made with local and often organic ingredients and they have a special Sunday Brunch menu. (I really enjoyed the Allagash Fish Tacos.) If I lived in Charlottesville I would definitely be a regular at this place. Keep in mind they share a parking lot with the restaurant next door so parking can be scarce. Many people end up parking on the nearby street. | 86 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 19/20 Prometheus (23) Bamberg, Germany | October 10, 2010 Cool place. Ate outside, had a few beers. The food was local and definitely fresh. Then went inside and sampled a few. Nice selection, passable prices.
Definitely a great place to pick up a few brews in C-Ville. | 72 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 16/20 mephisto (53) , Taiwan | September 24, 2010 a great gem in charlottesville! impressive selection of beer with nice lunch menu. very knowledgeable staff too. | 82 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 Velkyal (70) Charlottesville, Virginia | September 7, 2010| Updated February 28, 2011 Pretty much my go to pub in Cville. The service can be a bit hit and miss at times, but generally it is good. They have a good selection, despite the PBR, and with a handpull that rotates regularly there is always a reason to go back.
Update: I felt I was a touch harsh with the service mark previously and have seen a marked improvement on that front. I guess it helps being a semi-regular. But I love it when I go into a pub and the barman, without prompting, puts a sample in front of me based on knowing my taste in beer. | 84 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 dpento1 (4) Virginia | April 22, 2010| Updated December 10, 2010 Parking here is an absolute nightmare if you go anytime after 5:00 (I should note I have never been before 5:00) Food is good, Bottle selection is great for C-ville, or most anywhere for that matter! Service/Staff are very friendly but a little slow. A perfect place to stop in with a few friends if you have a few minutes to have beer! I go every chance I get when I’m on that end of town. | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 Elwood (97) Leesburg, Virginia | February 25, 2010| Updated December 10, 2010 I have to agree, parking here sucks, but it is worth finding a spot. The selection of beers on tap is decent and they have one of the better selections of bottles you will find in Virginia. In fact they have me wondering why my local beer store doesn’t stock some of this stuff! Food was okay but the staff seemed quite flustered and slow. At 3:00 p.m. If you can’t hack it then, it might be time to hang it up. Still, nice overall experience. | 78 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 17/20 tunneler (11) Charlottesville, Virginia | September 23, 2009| Updated December 10, 2010 Large bottle selection, about as good as you can get in VA, with some bottles chilled and ready to drink on-premises (beware the somewhat-too-high ’capping fee’ though). Food is delicious but a bit overpriced and there are portion size issues with some dishes, though the majority are fine. Service is usually a bit slow though - they are a victim of their own success here - but it is friendly enough and they make it easy to split checks. A dozen rotating taps though 4 are reserved for macros. The bartenders are usually great and will give you samples. | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 15/20 maniac (98) Baltimore, Maryland | January 21, 2009| Updated December 10, 2010 This is a beer store, with a bar. Its actually a cool spot to drop by for a beer while browsing the selections. The stuff on tap is usually tasty (and can be stuff that’s hard to find on tap). A small capping fee if you want to drink a few bottles while you’re there as well. Fairly reasonable prices, a large bottle selection and friendly staff. | 90 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 18/20 Butters (168) Richmond, Virginia | December 11, 2008| Updated July 6, 2011 Definitely my favorite place Ive come across in Charlottesville thus far. Very nice selection of bottle beers and a tap line-up that is nothing to thumb your nose at. They must have some connections cause they had a few of the rarer beer that ive seen {brooklyn flemish gold and southern tier reserves} The staff is a young hip crowd but they sure do appreciate their beers. One guy, I believe his name was Josh?, even taught a beer class seminar over at UVA. I love the fact that I can get my wife to go out here in the am so she can drink coffee and I can have a brew. Very awesome concept. Update: Have come back here several times, and I love it more and more. Have had several very rare beers and always have something cool in bottles to go. Love this joint. | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 13/20 Magjayran (22) Durham, North Carolina | May 24, 2008| Updated July 6, 2011 Is this a bar with a beer store in it? Is it a beer store with a bar? I vote for the latter. Decent selection of good beers from around the world. I was stoked to get a hold of some Ten Fiddy. Very nice cashier/bartender that poured a couple samples for us. Definitely recommended if you’re in the area. |
