As mentioned below, the Bier Haus is at the end of tram line 4, right next to the turning circle, and itís difficult to miss as itís a brutally large grey stone building incorporating a model windmill. I was asked to leave my coat in the cloakroom downstairs and was given a black plastic bag to carry my things in as everything (purse, camera, notebook, passport, etc.) had been in my coat pockets. Thus my entrance, via a spiralling stone staircase, was less than auspicious. The main beer hall is huge. It has chunky rustic wooden furniture and a row of enormous barrels with tables and benches inside. The stained glass windows depict stylised German castles and the waitresses were, of course, wearing dirndls. They have four of their own brews on tap plus a few bottles and an extensive food menu. If youíre going to trek out from central Ulan Ude (and it is quite a way - at least half an hour by tram, depending on the traffic) itís probably best to plan eating here as itís not a particularly cosy place just for a drink.

Thanks to Oakes and Beershine we made the effort to go to this place. The tram ride is worth the trip in its own right and indeed turns round right in front of the brewpub. Superb place for beers, ambience and you van even watch the trains shunting. The stout was indeed very good as were all the beers we tried. Although the trams run til 23.00 we missed the last one back as they stop early on a Sunday. Scary taxi ride followed

Bier Haus sits right at the very end of tram No. 4, so it is actually easy to get to despite being at the edge of town. Itís in a huge building that is shaped like a barrel. They carry four house beers, some good and some bad. Big menu with German and Russian food. Their stout is one of the better stouts Iíve found in Asia, surprisingly. Next door is a row of shops, the first of which had six beers on tap, five being new to me.

This large brewpub is really not as hard to find or reach as it seems. Itís very far outside of the central Ulan-Ude but the tram takes you right there. You canít miss the building because itís got a gigantic fake windmill outside. Plus, itís an interesting trip to the suburbs. Not the greatest beer but if youíre stopped in UU for a few days worth a trip especially because there is also a fun beer stall on the main street outside around the corner. At that place, they pull mainly PET growlers to go but you can also sit there and drink out of plastic cups and they have at least 8 taps.
