2009-01-27. Excellent choice of beers and taps. Contemporary atmosphere, but cozy enough. I had Crombe Oud Kriekenbier. Wonderful.

Itís a toss up whether this or Arendsnest is my favourite Amsterdam hostelry. Arendsnest certainly has the edge for Dutch beers but this place has a superb atmosphere, despite being just yards away from a busy pedestrianised shopping street. In fact, the choice of Dutch beers on tap was much better than I anticipated and not as Belgian dominated as I was expecting. And, apart from the obligatory dull pilsner, they are pretty much all high quality brews. There are interesting bottles of the week and bottles of the month (one of each). The main beer list is extensive but the Dutch selection there lags behind Arendsnest for interest. A big advantage is that it is open from midday, when many of the other top beer places in Amsterdam donít open until 4pm. In fact, the quieter period in the afternoon when the guvnor is invariably in evidence and has time to chat, is arguably the nicest time to visit, if sometimes a little quiet. Even at busier times though, despite the proximity of hordes of shoppers and tourists, it is not often jam-packed and usually thereís a seat to be found. Service is excellent and knowledgable. Prices are fair. Food is the usual cheese / sausage snacks. Always a joy to visit, I did so several times during the course of a 10 day stay.

A proper old boozer! Great characterful place that is far too easily walked past amongst the fast food and faster sex joints in the back alleys of old Amsterdam. Nice selection of well kept beers although I would like to see more Dutch beers here - there is always a few mind. Service is friendly. Donít be scared of sharing tables - itís a friendly crowd in here, about a 3rd local and a 3rd knowledgeable beer ttypes and the remainder curious tourists. Do watch the stairs and do use the hand grips. As with many stairs in Amsterdam they are narrow steps and quite steep and donít mix particularly well with enthusiastic consumption of beer!!

Crackiní pub with plenty of charm due to old-world decor, interesting beers and wonderful staff. On my few visits I had the pleasure of indulging the wide spectrum of beers from IPAís to Sours on tap to a cask condition Golden Ale from De Molen on cellar run, which was in great nick. Exceptional knowledge from the staff and extremely friendly to even us babbling foreign folk. Brilliant.

I thought this place was the bomb until we went to ít Arendsnest the next night. The ambiance was better here but I just seemed to enjoy the beer list at ít Arendsnest better. You canít wrong at either place though!

World class doesnít say enough about this great pub. 18 beers on draft, with a nice balance of Dutch and Belgian. Hundreds in the bottle. Fast, friendly and efficient bar service, offered a taste of anything unfamiliar that I ordered before i bought. Roomy bar that has a great vibe. The go-to spot of the bars in Amsterdam Iíve visited.

This place is pure craft beer quality!! .. from the super cool bar staff, the great selection of brews, and the decent prices- this place is a must stop if in Amsterdam .. . I would make this my local if i lived in Amsterdam.. . Also pretty easy to find but, as like quite a few buildings in the dam, watch your step going to the bathroom downstairs..especially after a few brews.. Ask for Nick, he was a cool cat! .. . Prost!

Just an old school gem, where people come to have a beer and a pleasant conversation. Friendly ambiance not disturbed by music. Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. Rotation on draught is frequent and many (mostly European) bottles available. Those can be expensive. A must.

One of Amsterdamís legendary beer bars - De Wildeman has a great (though not huge) standard selection but also gets a lot of interesting new tap beers in. Never fail to find something new or special to try here.

Visited July 10. Great beerselection and very helpful service. Great location, sat outside in the "sun" drinking beer and soaking in the atmosphere of Amsterdam.
