After countless trips upstairs to Churchkey, I finally made it to Birch & Barley. Place certainly has an upscale, rustic vibe but I was very happy that we would seat our group after we had just finished a race and were in running clothes. Service and food were fantastic. Certainly a more diverse menu than upstairs and the extra choices were great. Beer selection was unsurprisingly awesome and offered plenty of diversity. My only problem with the place is the prices. You certainly get quality, but I do feel that things tend to be a tad overpriced. Nonetheless, I great place to go.

For beer and restaurant it doesnít get much better than this. For just restaurant it gets a lot better just outside the door in most any direction. My main concern here is value, and as far as dinner/meals are concerned it isnít there.
Service, beer, all things beer people care about, this is the place for an expense account dinner when in the nations capital if you are trying to get some beer as well.

Great beer selection - hands down the best in the area. Crowded bar up top or nicer restaurant below. Itís a bit of a free-for-all finding a table during busy times but itís worth the wait. Service is hit or miss but that can also be attributed to the sheer volume of people in the bar. Iíll stop each time Iím back - itís that good.

The restaurant downstairs of Churchkey was actually more pleasant than Churchkey itself for us traveling as a couple. Beautiful setup with the massive organ reminders, beautiful walls and copper colours, exquisite lighting. The service was very professional and courteous. I was hoping for a little more on the food side though. We loved our homemade charcuterie plate as an appetizer, but I followed with a risotto that was abusively salty and close to unplalatable. The beer list though, is incredible, one of the best I have ever seen. Out of the 50+ taps, there were probably 30 that I felt like drinking right there, on the spot. Most of the beers Iíd never tried before. Plenty of rarities including rare one-offs from obscure breweries like Trois Dames and the tmave specialni from Kout of all things. Extraordinary selection really and the bottle list is also jammed with rarities. I try to order one that seemed especially appetizing though and they were out of it. I did not try another and donít know whether thatís a frequent occurrence. Prices were relatively steep, but not out of ground with DCís high standards.

I still canít figure out why this is a separate entry. Same beer selection as upstairs, better food menu, more sit-downy. Great place to take the missus for dinner.

Been twice went to dinner with my wife after site seeing in D.C. and drove in to have diner one night. We took the metro to McPherson Square and then walked the rest of the way, you know you have reached the place because there are tables on the side walk and a big garage door that is open on the front of the building. I have also driven here and had to park five blocks away, take the metro if possible. The place is dimly lit and has modern decor. The food is good, I had the braut burger with fries and on another location the braised goat and potatoes. The tap selection is excellent, 50 beer taps. The first time I went I was not offered a bottle menu. I like that they offer samples. The prices for food and beer are expensive, but high quality. The complementary bread is excellent, however the spinach salad was way over priced. The cheap 4 oz. samples went from $2 to $4 in two years? Bar tender this time seemed to be more knowledgeable than the waitress from two years ago. Overall the place is a little pretentious, but the food is very good, and they do have good beer.

Trendy place under Churchkey. Got a place right in front of the kitchen wich was kind of interesting until I see that everybodywas throwing a cup of duck fat in any dishes! Veggies, meat, potatoes, wham bang here comes Da PHAT! Incredible beer menu even if some stuff is totally past is prime. Food menu looked incredible until the food actually got to us. I must say I was highly disappointed by the main courses we had. Everything was tasteless and badly presented. Totally overrated cuisine in there. Service was good tough, atmosphere too, really cosy place. Bad night? It might have been considering all the praise Iíve heard from this place...

Unsure why the restaurant is separated from the bar as a rating, particularly since their taps come from upstairs. Trendy upscale space with rustic gastropub sort of fare. Excellent food and staff. Pricey, but suitable for special occasions.

nice joint. prefer the atmosphere of the upstairs churchkey beer bar joint. more formal restauarant setting at birch and barley downstairs. same tap list upstairs and downstairs. churchkey is a must visit in dc, birch and barley is fine, but again, like the laid back beer bar ambiance upstairs.
