Amazing shop which i never would have found but thanks to Ratebeer i did! The owners are very friendly, advised me on several beers. I was mainly interested in beers from the UK. Amazing selection. However the place was filled with beers from all over. Even some nice whales. Now i have to ’surprise’ my wife again when i make a detour and park my car in front of the door for a second beer run.
Visited on Friday afternoon on the way to Eden Project with my family. Quite small shop with great selection of beers from mostly Europe, USA and some others including Japan exclusive mass products and of course great UK selection including limited ones. Also two local casks on tap for take away. Prices are quite affortable. Nice couple (probably) runs the business, know what they are selling, very helpful and proud of the local breweries. I’ve found lots of new beers from my favorite breweries and some long time not seen ones which I’ve missed and gave it up to find them. For example Brewdog Abstrakt 8, which was a bit expensive and as I was a bit short of money I wanted to leave it there but at the end I’ve got it as a gift. Very nice gesture, many thanks!
My first visit to Bitter Virtue was long overdue. We stopped past the shop on drive from London to Dorset. It is located on an unassuming residential street with plenty of parking around. They open at 10:30am on a Sunday which suited us perfectly. Inside is stuffed full of a wide array of beers ranging from local to international. For a relatively compact shop it packs a punch. Loads of stuff that we either don’t see in London or beers that don’t hang around on the shelf for long. Staff/owners were very friendly and pretty knowledgeable. Hard to go wrong with this place. Deserves its space on the top echelon of beer shops in the UK.
Simply an amazing hidden gem in the middle of a residential area in outskirt of Southampton. Just out of nowhere, almost like somebody just got the idea of making their suburban home to a bottle shop. Fantastic selection with focus on smaller quality breweries, nice and tidy stocked in shelf for British, Belgium, German, USA and the rest of the world. Staff is very friendly and knowable. Reasonable priced and even one or two beers on cask for the thirsty shopper. Highly recommendable detour if you are in the remotely area.
Bitter Virtue is celebrating its 18th year serving the southwest beer community, so the very nice lady behind the till knows quite a bit about the local and regional beer scene, as well as the bottles on offer. And there are a lot of bottles. Not only were the shelves bursting at the seams, but there were boxes upon boxes in the middle of the store, courtesy of a fresh delivery yesterday. When I requested advice on black IPAs and non-Belgian sours, the lady came round and pointed out more than a dozen examples. And prices are reasonable. This is everything you could ask for in a beer shop.

Pleasant and tidy specialist beer shop tucked away in residential area. Fairly typical range of beers and prices for such a shop - a good focus on local beers, and a selection of beers from Belgian and America. There is an inclination toward some buzz names such as: Kernal, Struise, Mikkeller, De Molen, Thornbridge, Stone, etc, and pretty much all the local breweries, so there should be something to satisfy most beer geeks. If you’re in Southampton, and you’re a beer geek, you’ll like the place, and find it does the job.The shop’s website offers an up to date list that is worth studying. If you’re a big beer buyer and know what you like you may find it worthwhile to check prices against online suppliers such as BeersOfEurope and BeerRitz before making a visit, as there can be a wide difference on some bottles; however, there are plenty of beers in Bitter Virtue that are not available in those stores, and there is the benefit of getting personal advice if you’re not sure what you like, so there is value in paying a visit. I think it’s a place I may be popping into from time to time. And I will certainly take along any beer friends who come to stay or visit.
