Although seated in a beautiful Byward Market building, the faux English pub interior did not seduce us from the get-go. The huge, stonewalled shared terrace though is quite an oasis with all its shade on hot and humid days like the one on which we visited in early June. We were coming hoping for la totale, the full gastropub experience. We had some pretty good plates and the beer selection was nice enough, but we ended up finding the fancier venue, more expensive prices and not necessarily tastier if often more complex plates less convincing than what seemed like a friendlier atmosphere just a few blocks away at Brothers Beer Bistro. It’s hard not to compare the two when they have the same food attention, a similar tap selection and are so close to each other. And while Black Tomato has lots of strong points, it did not reach my heart the same way, not convincing me that I would want to spend more time here than what is required to finish my meal, in large part because what is to me a better alternative is close by.

Not a bad place if you need a beer place in a pinch.

Really an upscale restaurant but with a small drinking area. Food very good. Reasonable selection of local micros.

saw 15 taps, with at least 12 craft. As good as anything in Ottawa with of course Beaus right through to Guelph offerings.

My wifes fav eatery. Artsy bistro ambiance with local artwork and music. Service is typically more hit than miss, and beer knowledge varies depending on server. Beer selection is okay not a huge variety but they focus on micro Ontario beers and better macro varietys (Creemore, McAuslan, Griffon). Food is excellent, eclectic inspired maybe a little pricy though (ditto for the beer). Still one of the better spots in the Market though.

Great food, the service was spotty i got a hassle for wanting to sit outside on a beautiful sunday afternoon in June.....what is up with that? The beer selection was lacking the lineup was a unimpressive, the 3 beers i wanted were either no longer carried, or they ran out. THe menu was obviously old. Meh, i dont see myself goijng back.

Visited this small but spaciously arranged restaurant and bar back in October when it was fairly busy on a cold weekend lunch break. Friendly service brought some delicious cheesy chicken sandwiches and tasty brews to our table where we munched away and listened to the good selection of music playing. Selection is decent and the place is in a good location for the market nearby.

Cozy bohemian-yuppy interior is cooler than that makes it sound, on the small side but pleasantly so. Racks of CDs just inside the door briefly make you question if you walked in the right door! Staff was friendly and helpful – even fetching a phone book and helping decipher my Ottawa tourist map. Some menu items can be on the pricier side if you are on a budget as I was, but it is all reasonably priced, and probably a bargain compared to other places in the market. Both me and my girlfriend ordered the Cajun Chicken Cheddar melt which was served on a huge piece of “Texas Toast” like fresh bread, large chunks of chicken and solid cheddar. I’d order it again, but would likely ask to drop the wee side salad in favour of the lovely potatoes. Tap list is nothing Ontarians will drool over, but has a serviceable list of Ontario micros (Church Key, Scotch Irish) and some McAuslan products. Go for the food and a tasty pint. Would definitely return.

Oops, never rated this haunt! A small restaurant that happens to have a decent selection of micro beers. Worthy of note: Durham Hop Addict, Wellies, our local Beau’s, Tank House, Creemore and the 5 McAuslans available on tap: Cream, Pale Ale, Stout, Abricot and the 2 Griffons. Menu and beers are pricey, but I enjoy a pint there once in while, when shopping in the ByWard Market.
