Very good quality selection of drafts. Far too crowded at times as a result.

We visited The Blue Blazer Saturday 19th March 2016. The three of us (me, Dad and Barry) were on a weekend jaunt up to Edinburgh. I had never been here before, but realised that I had walked past it once or twice. It is a freehouse situated on a corner in the shadow of the castle (South West side). I would suggest that if taking in the likes of Hanging Bat, Brauhaus, Cloisters then this would happily sit at the start or finish of this crawl over this area.

From the outside it is quite a nice looking corner pub. Inside it is a traditional two room layout, the larger front room as you enter housing the vast majority of the bar, a tiny section extended into the backroom but the main serving area was the front bar. The choice was more traditional, with just cask as I recall, but with the footfall in here (it was busy) I guess that this would have a good turnover of beers. The beer we had was in great condition. The rugby was on the Telly in the backroom where we sat and despite being France v England (I wasnít interested) it seemed popular and the myth of Scots supporting anyone but England didnít appear to be followed here.

I liked this place, it was too busy and too dark to take in my surroundings properly (I missed the mosaic/tiled floor others mention) but I would certainly return here, it was friendly, welcoming and deservedly popular.

Small traditional pub at the corner of Spittal Str., just around the castle area, and the old town of Edinburgh. Decent selection of local and English micros, good selection of whiskeys and bourbon, friendly service. I stayed for a couple of weeks in a flat across the street in July 2008, and would visit every single day for my daily ale dose. Gets crowded during the Fringe Festival. It always feels like home, and itís always a pleasure to be here whenever I visit Edinburgh.

Not the most exciting selection of cask beer in the city but usually quite varied. Also boasts an impressive whisky and bourbon selection.

Trad boozer as you descend from the castle on the Haymarket side. No frills, no nonsense, the place has always had a steady foot flow whenever Iíve called in. 7 or 8 casks usually on the go, dispensing Scottish micros topped up by a few English numbers. Decent boozer but probably not a ígo toí venue if you were on a time budget whilst in Edinburgh.

Small pub with a great tapline south-west of Edinburgh Castle. I lived in a nearby hotel and nearly didnít get any further. Had such a nice time here. Lovely people, fine selection of Scots craftbeers, kegs and so on. Highly recommend a visit to this sublime little pub.

Great little pub en route to the Hanging Bat and Cloisters. Lots of locals watching the horse races and football on a Saturday afternoon. Not much room, but they made the most of it, with lots of small tables to sit at, generating an intimate pub atmosphere. Good selection of cask ales, competent service.

Small and atmospheric corner pub below the castle on its south-west side. This older styled real ale venue is intimate and popular enough to be twice its size, although thatís part of the charm about this city centre establishment close to the theatresí. Thereís no shortage of ale choice here and cask eats up the lion share of the small bar that faces you as you walk in.

I enjoyed visiting this pub. Not the most spacious of places, but thereís a good (yet modest) selection of Scottish cask beers on offer, plus some keg too. The service was friendly and the pub has a late licence!

Excellent, traditional, two-roomed corner pub behind the castle and just around the corner from the Hanging Bat. Eight very well kept and fast rotating cask ales. I came here on a Friday pub crawl and had seven ales that I hadnít tasted before. Two days later, on Sunday, almost the whole range of cask ales were new. Itís a freehouse, very cozy, charming run-down, and inviting. Friendly service. I felt immediate comfortable here. In good company with fellow ratebeerians mr_h, Stuartyboy and JohnRMurdoch. Many people but not crammed during our stay (visited 09.08.2013 and by myself on Sunday 11th August).
