Stopped by here on a vacation to Minnesota last summer (2003). Flying in from Florida - the breadth of quality Midwestern Beers was quite impressive. I also liked the way that the regions of the world were broken out into different coolers - if I was not interested in Slavic/Russian lagers - I didnít bother looking in that cooler. I picked up a bunch of Bellís, Capital other midwestern locals and various English beers that I do not have access to down south. Very impressed with the prices - $1.79 for a Bellís IPA if I remembered correctly. I would say they had at least 700 different beers there - would be overwhelming to a novice and he might just grab something he is familiar with rather than wade through the voluminous selection. A few of the bottles I picked up were a month or two past the freshness date noted on the bottle - but there were no skunks among the 24 I picked up. Friendly staff - loaded up all of my bottles in record time and even supplied the empty six pack hold and a case box. I will make this a regular stop on my annual visit to Minnesota.

I asked if I could build an appartment and live above the store. It is a fantastic place, well worth the drive for anyone in the Twin Cities. They keep a good sized collection of glassware, although it's always changing so you can't be too sure what will be there. Excellent selection of many beers, especially Belgian. He may not have every top rated beer, but nor do most others. he also cellars beers himself in the back. I recently found '98 Bigfoot for no more than an '03 vintage! They also have a killer scotch selection if you enjoy that too.

Beer guy Jim rocks the Twin Cities beer world. He is always doing his best to keep us geeks well supplied. The Belgian selection is as good as I've seen. He has things grouped by country. Almost all beers are in coolers - with the exception of a small "build your own six pack" shelf.

The best bottle shop in the Twin Cities. There is a great scotch selection, and 1500+ beers, almost all in coolers. They always have things here that no one else does. Service is fine if you get the right person, especially their beer guy Jim. Some staff can be rather surly and unhelpful, but these seem to be new people more often than regulars. I find the best service is available during the day, and not so good in the evening.

1/4/06: Exactly 2 years later I am re-rating Blue Max. Just wanted to add that they seem to have beers I havenít seen anywhere else in the Metro Area. Picked up Dieu de Ciel Peche Mortel and Arcadia Hopmouth Double IPA. 1/4/04: Given all the hullabaloo I had heard about Blue Max, I was a little disappointed. Donít get me wrong, it has an excellent selection...just not as excellent as I had expected. Still for selection it is unparalleled in the Twin Cities. Their beer is organized in a bit of a hodge podge fashion, largely based on Country, with some on shelves and some in refrigerators. A must visit for any Ratebeerian while in town.

Without a doubt the best place to buy beer in Minnesota, and among the best in the Midwest. Jim, the lead beer buyer there, tends to work afternoons and evenings, and he is highly enthusiastic about beer. He has maintained a very diverse list--great Belgians (Dec. 2003: 6 different Fantomes, 8 different Cantillons), tons of Russian/Polish/Czech bottles, a good mix of UK beers (good selection of George Gale, e.g.), and plenty of things from elsewhere. There is a singles shelf where Iíve been able to buy lots of the Bells and Capital beers (there are also six packs) and there are plenty of other goodies. Most everything is stored in coolers. Prices may be a bit high but there arenít too many places you can get some of this stuff, so thatís the choice. Definitely the ONE place I always go when Iím in the Twin Cities.
