by far the best beer joint in Rome. Seems a little out of the way on a map, but is a reasonable walk from the city center. Alex (owner/importer) is incredibly knowledgeable about beer and incredibly hospitable as well. Try the house brew if you’re into wood-aged IPA’s - amazing! Selection is the best I’ve seen in terms of rare beers. If you’re from America, you’ll find many beers not available on your respective coast. A must-visit for serious beer drinkers in Roma

A very nice place with a big terrace on the roof. Excellent tap beers and good bottle beers too. And real ales of course. The staff is very friendly. The owner is a beer mad in a good way. Cheers, Alex. I´ll be back (23-27.5.2009).

Strange, but interesting, place with a striking interior. It is located in an industrial area next to a car scrap yard. But when you get inside it is a super-modern bar which looks like an expensive hotel bar. Many beers on draft including the delicious White Dog Stout from cask and a nice terrace on the top, which helps you escaping the obnoxious electronic music. A good beer selection and a interesting decor makes this place worth visiting, but be warned: it may seem like a cocktail bar at first.

An extremely odd place that attracts mostly young people, but the beer offered is of very high quality, you’ll have a few german and belgian specialties on top of rarer Italian ones (White Dog for example) which makes for enough stock to spend a nice evening. Very efficient service, quick and apparently happy with their job. Rather loud music, but it feels at place. They really seem to appreciate beer and you would never guess that from the outside which looks like nothing and especially not from the pseudo-modern inside which looks like everything.

Brasserie 4:20 is a new venture in Rome, launched in early March 2007 by local beer connoisseur Alex Liberati. It’s situated in an old railway arch, south of the city centre on the banks of the Tiber. Only quality beer is dispensed from the chrome taps (15 of them, no less), which are suspended above the raised bar which lines one side of the venue. The staff understand the beers they are selling, and explain each beer’s origins and taste profile as they bring it to your table. Every beer is served in the correct glass - that’s a house rule. Outside of Belgium, I’ve never seen such attention to detail in the service and enjoyment of beer. The decor is sophisticated and modern, but a warm and welcoming atmosphere is created by the bare brick and curved ceiling. A DJ stand sits above on a small balcony, laid across empty kegs. The extensive food menu, offering Italian cuisine with a modern twist, pairs the food with appropriate choices from the beer list. Beer is even used in the recipes for several of the dishes.
