How many favourite bars can you have in one town? This one is yet another in Brugge that I always like to visit. Been coming here for years before it arrived in Tim Webbs books. The Fighter’s House is a two storey, modern bar with a small outside area above the roadway which I like to use during the day. Inside can be a bit antiseptic and empty if you are only drinking, it seems more like an eating joint once through the doors, at least during the day it feels that way. In the evening when the diners come out it livens up within. Always clean, smart and neat, the food is very, very good, but not cheap. The chairs/stools are designed in a modern way and the white plates the food comes on are huge. Never had problems with the staff, a bit stand-off-ish maybe, but I prefer to be left alone until I want some service and don’t need advice on what food and drink I want. They have a beer of the month advertised on a board as well as in the menu, and a fine selection all the time. I normally have the special or something from the Dolle Brouwers first. You always get a little bowl of something with each beer, radish, salted biscuits, etc, etc. All in all a very pleasant place to while away some time or have a ’blow-out’ meal with good quality beers.

We visited here on Friday 5th December 2014, another one we popped in having read Wimpeyjoe’s review. because I ws keen to sniff out somewhere new in Brugge to go. It is situated on a corner at the end of the street that runs alongside the Belfort, so if you view the Belfort head on it is the RH side. As I said it is situated on a corner it also backs onto the street that runs along the back of the Belfort. I was aware of this place as I have looked at before when looking for somewhere to eat, though I don’t recall going in here. Choice wise it is a little limited a cursory tot up of the menu suggests just over 50 beers, but with a few less common amongst that number. As we did in the Bierbistro which incidentally we visited straight after here we opted to return to beers we’d had before, so De Dolle Dulle Teve and Orbier for us, prices every so slightly on the high side as they were both about €4.80 each. You climb up a short flight of steps to reach this place and enter via the side/corner. It has a bar ahead to your right and tables scattered around. The window where we sat looked out on a patio with large parasols and patio heaters to keep those who ventured outside (mainly smokers) dry and warm. Service was unbelievably slow, despite having shown us to a table the waiter seemingly then forgot/ignored us, I had to grab the attention of his female colleague to get a beer. Sadly this place was also overun by a few families who appeared to have little or no parental control over their young children, who regularly kept crawling past our table and were a tad shrieky, their older siblings having to chase after them and scoop them up and return them back to their seat, sadly they were fellow countrymen from Birmingham area by the sound of things. I think that we are very tolerant but I do get frustrated by parents who really seem disinterested in the antics of their children and how this affects others. Anyway rant over back to the bar. Its modern with the upstairs and ceiling looking like they’d been created (lots of metalwork) primarily to get more space and shoehorn more in, it didn’t appear original. It was a popular place but they did have a few tables for those just drinking. Can’t say I would rush back here as there are too many good places to go to in this city but it was ok.

Down the narrow pedestrian street at the side of The Belfry, just beyond ’The Pub’, this Brasserie is in a modern building with a modern decoration inside and feels somewhat plush given the plethora of historic looking buildings and drinking holes in the city. It caters for all though and does well from tourists given its location and its ground floor is raised above ground level allowing an outside terrace that looks down into the pedestrian alley below. The brasserie is in a large room, big enough for twin floors with the winding staircase up to the second level taking up a large area in the centre of the room. The beer selection is not quite as good as some other places in the vicinity, but it’s got a few surprises that might please one or two beer hunters, alongside what is best described as a familiar Belgian menu card. Food is popular here though, and the main reason people are here.
