Visited a couple of time, and each time difficult to find :-). Placed in a cellar, the first time I came by, I more or less thought I was in the wrong place. Cosy atmosphere, friendly and serviceminded staff, and most times the beers are in a good condition. The brewery plant is in the brewpub.. They do a monthly beer, so there is a reason for coming back...

Charming brewpub in Wedding, just a few meters from Hopfen & Malz. Often packed with students. They brew a different style every 3-4 weeks, so you never get bored.

Odd cellar brewpub in a project bulding with limited opening hours. Large variety of beers. 5 when we visited. Most in good condition. Cheap as well.

Kind of a funny place, not so easy to find in a yard off the main street and then down into the basement. Has a bit of a student pub feel to it, like it was shoehorned into the only available space, but the servers are very nice when you are nice to them and the beer is fresh and tasty. Nothing special in terms of kinds of beer, it’s very traditional kind of stuff, but good nonetheless. No matter which beer you try, they all have an underlying kind of Eschenbräu character/flavour. The food is pre-packaged pretzels or flammkuchen, but taste good when you’re peckish. The place and experience on the whole is charming. And they have many different kinds of homemade apple juices to go, and you can buy large (1 and 2 litre sized) of to-go bottles of the beer for dirt cheap.

A bustling basement bar in a residential area well off the tourist trail. Beer I thought on par for Berlin (ie below elsewhere - why do people in this city tolerate such poor beer?) and food is just pretzel or flammekuchen from a plastic packet!

Strange place a bit out of the City, A garden and cellar bar in a courtyard. When we were there only the garden was open, it was good weather. Bring your own food, drink their beers. Nice and very lokal !!!

Wedding isn’t too far out of the centre, get here via the S Bahn, walk along until you see Triftstrasse and when at 67 turn left off the road, Um Die Eche (round the corner) is in big letters on the building at 67. I read on the Brewpubs website that they were digging up a barrel of beer they had buried. We turned up at the alloted time to find two blokes with pickaxes and a lady with a spade hacking away at the frozen earth. The three turned out to be the brewer (Martin), his wife and her father. It was very cold and getting dark, so we left them to it and walked down the stairway into the bar. An hour later the barrel of ’Alte Schwede’ was broached and we had a long chat with the brewer and a bunch of his regulars. He is from Karlsruhe originally and his beers were wonderful. The regular light and dark beers were spritzy, tangy and obviously fresh, we were sat below the brewing kettles, so they hadn’t travelled far. The beer raised from the earth had been in the ground 10 months and we were all keen to see what effect, if any the ageing had done. It was a mellow, smooth tasting brew which the brewer claimed had changed greatly from the original fresh ’Old Swedish’. It was also the best beer I had during my week in Berlin (Green Week 2009). The celler bar was a mass of humanity when we left at 20.00, full of happy people drinking his beers. A real mix of ages, some old, some young. When we arrived at 17.00 it was queiter and we had the choice of any seats we wanted. Low ceiling and basic furniture, the actual bar is to your right as you walk in. Not a cosy, warming sort of place, but a no-nonsense beer bar which we loved. The beer-garden was being dug up on our visit, but in the summer I bet it is a great place to have some interesting beers. While we were there some people came in with Pizza’s, the bar has a ’Pretzel Oven’ but otherwise it is bring your own. A great place to drink beer in; and Martin is a top bloke too, we have been three times now and really love the set up.

Hard to find but worth the adventure

Eschenbräu, the pearl of he Wedding beer culture... Well sarcasm aside. In Wedding so far Eschenbräu is for me the only place to go if you crave for some goods beers. The atmosphere is laid back, customers are from many walks of life and service is usually very friendly. Beer are quite good, the usual pils, alt berliner dunkel, wiezen plus monthly seasonal this month it was Rauchbier.. Definitely one the top places in Berlin for some authentic pub/kneipe feeling (although quite ascetic in a sense) just enjoy good beer from the draught.

Cool place, spacious with different in-cave environments, could come for a quiet pint or some pronounced Geselligkeit. There’s a funky smell, though, and lots of BO from the large party in the front, but the back rooms are fresher. They seem to be proud of their own traditions, and there’s a really nice community feel here. Classic rock and a pleasant, clamorous vibe. And not hard to find, just might have to go through a maze of gates and fences. Like the large number of seasonals (i.e., monthlies), and €1,90 for a Kleines is pretty, pretty good. Also, Wedding is strange place, and a guy could have an interesting weekend there. [66]

So, my second visit wasn’t as crowded, the beers tasted about ten times better, and the unharried service could actually wend itself to my table. Didn’t even smell muffig! Goes to show most places deserve a second chance. Still has a good mix of old, young, and old friends, and really nails the welcoming ’community’ feel. [74]
