Visited 15/5/14. Out of town and less tradition than most but very popular with lively atmosphere. Excellent unfiltered kolsch, weiss and alt. Also had bottled Maebock & kampot black, very good

To sum up my total experience in one word: Disappointment. I read all the positive reviews and went to this place expecting a german craft beer revelation paired with some delicious food. Instead what my friend and I experienced was a series of average to dishwater with lemon tasting swill and dry reheated, possibly microwaved crap cuisine. The positives were the ambience, service and price however these factors couldn’t quite make up for all the little disasters such as getting the wrong meals. The restaurant was packed - we were the only table eating. The rest of the patrons were only drinking one or two of the 6 styles on offer. I don’t understand why they were so popular, it is possible i caught them on an off day - however I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone and I will not be going back.

Me, my dad & Barry visited here on Friday the 28th March 2014, arriving at about 6:40pm. The place was already filling up but we managed to get a table as we planned on eating here as well. This place is in the Ehrenfeld district which is situated slightly north west of the centre. It is easy enough to get to I think google maps suggests a 40-45 min walk from the centre or easier is by train from the main station getting off after two stops at Ehrenfeld or alternatively we took the tram/Ubahn (not sure what it was) from Neumarkt lines 3&4 will get you there & Leyendecker is the closest stop. The bar is situated on the corner of Christianstrasse & Venloer Strasse and as you enter the bar is right ahead with tables and chairs off to the right and a narrower strip to the left with a few (not many) tables here. We sat close to the kitchen and end of the bar adjacent to a table where a mass beer tasting was going on with a number of Americans and Germans incl: Sebastian brewer for this place, a brewer from Victory in the states Ollie? The German lambic blender plus the top RB rater, they seemed to be having a very good evening with plently of bottles being opened. I really liked the Braustelle Alt & Helios which was a very crisp hoppy Kolsch version the Pink Panther was also ok. The food was superb really excellent we started with a sausage and potato soup then I had Schnitzel with potatoes and blood sausage it was marvellous. Dad had a grilled cheese type salad thing an
went the whole hog :-) with pork knuckle, the two people in the kitchen worked wonders we were mightily impressed with our meals. We chatted to Sebastion and Ollie and they occasionally brought over a taste of the latest beers they had to sample. We really enjoyed it here and spent all evening just in this one pub, as well as the aforementioned beers we also had a TripelBock, Imperial Rye Stout and Barry had a sour brown. I would strongly recommend to anyone in Cologne to come here, beer, food, friendliness is all here in abundance. A top place.

This place absolutely rocks. It is located in the suburbs of Cologne, quite a bit out of the cities centre so you need to make a detour in order to get here but it is well worth the effort. Way smaller than the Kölsch bars in the city with no special micmac floating around, it looks almost on the border of rundown but it works somehow, pretty unassuming place. There was some brewing equipment next to where we set, equipment that actually looked used to me. Selection appears to be pretty variable and was limited to Braustelle beers when I was here. Lots of stuff was out so they had only about 6 or so beers available but still compared to most places having only one beer available in Cologne this is a pretty big selection. All of them were exiting and new interpretations of traditional German styles, the likes of which you would not expect in Germany. Their Kölsch is unfiltered and hoppy, they had a beer with USA hops, beers with spices etc. Staunch defenders of the Reinheitsgebot are probably bound to get a hearth attack here which is one of the reasons why I loved this place. Traditionalist are probably not going to have a good time here as well, they actually brew & sell an Alt in Cologne, awesome! While it seems like a lot of bottles of theirs you get elsewhere are frequently infected, nothing I had here suffered from any issues. Either the infections have been recently resolved or they take time to developed, either way, the beer I got here was excellent and without issues. Service was very good & helpful, they helped me figure out which beers were available, were patient with our rowdy crowd etc. Prizes for the beers seemed very reasonable to me, 2.40 € for a sour with flowers at a bar is a lovely deal in my opinion. We ate here, food was similarly prized to what we saw in the city & downright cheap compared to Belgium. The food was wonderful, traditional German fare, portions were more than enough & it was absolutely delicious. Bottles could be taken away. Even their music selection seemed to be defiant, they were playing dubstep (at a low & very reasonable volume).

Visited on Saturday evening 27/04/13 fairly late around 10.30pm to find the place booming.
We took a train from Koln HBF to Ehrenfeld station, 10 minute ride then a 5 or so minutes walk.
Medium sized bar kind of U shaped with the bar in the centre and the right hand side more a separate room.
We eventually bagged a table for 6 after lurking for 20 minutes or so near a group who had just eaten.
At the business end the bar staff (we ordered at the bar which was a nice change!) were friendly and knowledgeable. 4 taps of Braustelle beers plus 10 or so bottles from Braustellea and Freigeist.
Good vibes in this bar from a predominantly young crowd. Must visit for the ardent beer ticker on a weekend in Koln/NRW as the hopped up Kolsch and bottled stouts make a nice change from the trad styles of the area.
We had to wait 20 minutes for a table

Great place a bit outside of the city center, but reallz a must stop. the selection seemed a bit slimmer than usual when we went, but their beers, and the guest bottles they get in, are very interesting and should be tried. The food was great, and came in enormous portions. Staff was very nice about answering my questions. Great place for new kinds of beer in the area.

I wish places like this existed when I lived in Germany. I visited just before their beer festival, and all the brewers were seated at the stammtisch - I was honored to be invited to sit with them, whereupon koeschtrinker started opening a slew of Brazilian beers. That was the last thing I expected in Germany. The food was the highlight of my trip, amazing. Tap list was incredible, and you can go around the bar toward the kitchen and pick out some bottles on top of a small fridge there. Even the locals were more or less fun, and some were adventurous to tey some non-rheinheitsgebot beers. Priceless.

Some inspirational brewing, especially in Germany, the first place I ever saw (in Germany) doing apricot and ginger beer! They also do an Alt ! Well worth the tram ride if you have the time.

Some out-of-the-ordinary beers in Germany/ sour ale, Berliner Weisse/, the best Koelsch /unffiltered/ in Cologne , poor Weizen and average Alt. Food better than most in Germany /though it doesn’t mean much , really/. Good service and nice owner. Overall the best place in Cologne.
