64 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 4/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 12/20 savnac (226) Anchorage, Alaska | November 21, 2010 Nice location and nice interior set up. We just sat in the bar for some beer. Service pretty much sucked, I sat for 10 minutes while my full glass of Blind Pig sat at the tap until I got the guys attention. I also don’t like it when someone pretends to know about beer, that might work on a average customer but not on a ratebeerian. Good selection of inhouse beers which were not really that good, but a great selection of beers from other breweries. I would go back if I was in Oceanside just because they are the only beer place around. | 84 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 16/20 Ungstrup (345) Citizen of the universe, Denmark | November 17, 2010 Somewhat of a diner feel. A long, not that wide a room with big windowpains facing the streets, making it very light. Brewing equipment close to the entrance on the corner. Easy access either by train or parking in the street. On my second visit we sampled 15 different beers, both own and other brands. I’ll definately come back when I’m in the area again. | 76 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 15/20 Brewman63 (39) Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | September 24, 2010 Walked to here our first night in Oceanside only to find out they just closed for the night. Went back the next day for lunch. Glad we did. Service at the bar was great. Tried the Nitro DMJ (IPA on nitrogen) which was very good, very drinkable. Had pizza for lunch which was also very good. Would definitely go back if in the area. | 64 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 13/20 MartinT (521) Montreal, Quebec | August 4, 2010 Average brewpub with average brews and food in a setting not unlike the Pizza Ports in the area, but with a little less warmth. The brewer had been changed a few weeks before my passing by, so the brews weren’t as impressive as they were supposed to be, but that may change soon enough, I guess. I wouldn’t go out of my way to try this place again, but it is mostly because of the amazing beer spots in SoCounty SDiego. | 80 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 15/20 BMan1113VR (306) Los Angeles, California | July 25, 2010 Stopped by on a Saturday afternoon.Nice place. Parking was kind of hard. Crowd was mostly there for the pizza it seemed, as most of the pitchers I heard being ordered were things like Shocktop and Bud Light. I can understand having Bud on for a BMC clientele, but Shocktop? When you brew a perfectly good hefe?! I met the new brewer who was working behind the bar that day. I was taking notes so he chatted me up and I found out some things about the house beers. They have maverick back on but its a 100% different recipe from the one that the former pizza port brewer brewed. The brewer was nice and offered to buy me a pint when he heard that I brewed as well. Pretty nice place, and a good alternative to the pizza ports. I would return. | 62 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 5/10 OVERALL 12/20 Snojerk321 (54) San Diego, California | July 11, 2010 Went here specifically for Maverick. The Berry Kriek was pretty awesome too. Pretty nice inside, decent service, I just don’t like Oceanside. | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 16/20 Dogbrick (561) Columbus, Ohio | June 8, 2010 (Visited 10/2008): Breakwater Brewing is located not too far from the Oceanside in Oceanside, CA off I-5. It is on Hill Street about a block away from Mission Ave, and there is a lot of street parking available.
The brewpub (although a bar at the time of my visit - they do not have any of their own beers yet due to some kind of wrangling with the city according to the bartender) has a horizontal layout, with the bar running most of the length of it. There is some booth/table seating as well, and several flat screen TVs around. Their beer list is on a chalkboard behind the bar.
Breakwater has a pretty good selection of guest draughts, with taps representing Ballast Point, Mad River, Stone, Rogue, and Victory among others. I did not see a bottle list so I am not sure what is represented there.
Service was good on a weekday evening. The bartender who also works at Oggi’s was familiar with their beers and made good recommendations.
I tried the BBQ Chicken pizza for dinner and it was very good.
All in all this place has potential, especially once they have their own brews available. Even so, despite the plain Jane atmosphere it is a good place to check out. | 80 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 peteinSD (42) San Diego, California | May 27, 2010 I’m biased as I live in O’Side but I’ve always found at last 2-3 quality beers on tap when I’ve stopped in for a beer. The food is basic but tasty and the prices are fair. Good natured, working folks crowd and friendly staff. I never was too impressed by the beer they make but to be honest I did not try it a great deal and I do believe there has been some turn over in brewers, | 52 AMBIANCE 2/5 SERVICE 4/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 12/20 Rustyham (98) St. Petersburg, Florida | April 19, 2010 The most disspaointing place during my visit to San Diego, this place has about 20 beers, ass made on the premises. I had a Sour fruit beer which was quite lame. I wanted to try some of theother beers, but the ABVs were too high for 11am. | 86 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 CaptainCougar (142) Columbia, Maryland | February 25, 2010 Really nice draft beer selection includes maybe a dozen of their beers and two dozen or so guest beers. Lots of different styles represented in both the house and guest beers with some harder to find stuff and one sadly over-worked Coors Light tap. The quality of the house beers is top notch and the pizza I had was very good as well. Good, friendly service too. This could pass as another Pizza Port location if it was more surfing themed. The tap selection rivals PP Carlsbad. I will definitely be adding this to my list of places I try to frequent when I’m in southern California. |
