Love this place. Bit sparten inside, but fantastic location under the windmill. Well worth the trek from the centrum. Possibly the best value beers in town(2.0-2.8 Euros). Best to arrive early as it gets very busy.

Itís love or hate with the IJ Brouwerij, both for the place as for their beers. Considering there are a few IJ beers I really like, I guess it is love on the end. The brewpub has an outspoken no-nonsense character, which not everyone might like, service means queing with the hodgepodge of tourists, locals, freaks, yuppies and whoelse. Nice!

Bit windy for the terrace so we chose to sit inside. The white tiles give it a clean feel and is a nice blink to the old bath house this used to be in the old days, while the wooden benches and the old bottles make a beer head feel rather at home.
Service is OK, you have to go, order and collect your own beer at the bar, canít pay by card (so bring cash) but extra points given because the bartender came to our table and returned the (considerable) change one of our company forgot to collect.
Selection is on the small side, their own beers (not all) and besides beer there is only very limited choice. Nothing hot (tea/coffee) which was a miss for some in our company.
Food is quite basic, just snacks, but all of high quality.

Located just outside the center of Amsterdam, still easy to find, search for the big Molen. Good weather caused to open the terrace and sitting outside with a Struis and a sheep cheese form the IJ brewery made it very nice. Selection are only the IJ beers and not all are available. Interior looks good, with a very nice selection of empty bottles throughout the place. All by all a nice place, especially with good weather to sit outside.

Ďt IJ brewery sits by a windmill in the eastern part of Amsterdam, set back from a busy crossroads, and within easy walking distance from the city centre on a sunny Sunday at the beginning of April. Thereís a large outdoor seating area, which was quite busy when we arrived mid-afternoon after visiting the interesting resistance museum en route. Inside thereís an L-shaped tasting room framed by the bar, with lots of standing room but not many tables. Itís quite basic, half tiled in white, with an array of empty bottles from just about every brewery I could name on narrow shelves above. The symbol of the brewery is an ostrich and this theme is carried through to the broken ostrich egg lampshades. There was a good range of IJ beers available Ė Plzen (not actually a pilzen), Natte, Ijwit, Zatte, Columbus, Struis (ostriches again!) and a seasonal (Paasij) on tap, all priced between E1.90 and E2.50; bottles at E2.90; plus fruit juice, mineral water and cheese. The recommended local soft cheese, made from sheepís milk and a bit like Camembert, was good but at E5 for a small round not as reasonably priced as the beers. The bar staff were friendly, knowledgeable and efficient, even when faced with an extremely busy bar after the brewery tour finished. Unfortunately we missed it but thereís a free tour at 1600 on Sundays and Fridays. Oh, and when we were there was a book on sale celebrating 25 years of the brewery.

I like this place a lot. Definitely has more of a brewery tasting room than a bar vibe (no complaints about that) although, if the sun is shining, much of the action is on the terrace outside rather than inside. So much so on the sunny day we visited that we had to sit inside as the terrace was full. The bar area was apparently a bath-house in a previous life. The Ij beers are generally pretty decent and you can get the full range here. On the downside itís rare for Ij to bring out a new beer so there was only one new beer for me (and that was only because Iíd previously overlooked that one as I thought Iíd rated it before). Still, it was good to be able to taste them on draught as Iíd mainly had them from bottles before. Food is limited to cheesy and meaty snacks - the sheeps milk cheese (forget what they call it) was pretty good. Service is from the bar - knowledgable and enthusiastic. An essential visit in Amsterdam and not as long a walk from the centre as I expected.

Bustling brewpub thatís a decent walk from the centre. ít IJ attracts large numbers of tourists and locals alike. Beers are decent and snack food available. Staff are efficient and no problems getting served quickly and with a smile. To be fair I wouldnít write home about this place, so Iíve written about it on Rate Beer instead.

Great place to visit. specially in the summer. I love the way it contradicts with modern hospitality ethics, but still is packed almost every day. The atmosphere is brilliant. Somehow everybody seems to become at ease as soon as they start drinking their beers and smell the typical scent inside.
