This place has the best beer selection in Bamberg, and you won’t find it on the tourism bureau guide to Bamberg Beer Culture as it isn’t a brewery. Close to the train station, here you will find local beers from small breweries in the countryside. You don’t find those in the typical Bamberg bier keller as they naturally focus on their house beers. At Cafe Abseits you will find beers with HOPS! Beers from German brewers who are pushing the envelope. American hops with bold citrus notes. You’ll also find some nice Belgian beers. The widest range of local German craft beers in Bamberg, and good food to boot. In nice weather the small bier garden is delightful, as is the charming and knowledgeable owner Gerhard. This place has heart and soul! Highly recommended.

First place I visited in Bamberg. I had the luck to be served by the owner, a true beer lover. I let him guide me and I couldn’t have been happier. Everything was perfect and even the food was very good.

I honestly think this is one of the best bars in the world. It’s the biggest beer menu I’ve ever seen in Germany. They’ve got fresh beers from around Germany, lambics, and lots of Belgium’s. Good service. The ONLY downside it its location. I missed it the first time thinking I was going the wrong way. I’m glad I made another trip back. It’s kind of hard to find via various maps. They have the full run of Weyermans beers. If you can’t make it to the Weyermans store, make a trip here. I think it’s the only place to get them. It was the only stop in Bamberg I could find some fresh Maibock…in May. After about 3 beers, I asked about carryout and it was available. I put together a big list including some Weyermans and Andescher. Well, the waiter brought the list to Gerhard I guess. From the list, Gerhard must have known I was a beer traveler. He brought the beers over himself and apologized for not having 1 in stock. I probably talked beer with Gerhard for 30 minutes. He was very genuine and great to speak with. It sort of made my trip and helped me understand the Bamberg beer scene. He was extremely gracious with the pricing of my carryout beers giving me a very nice discount. I really appreciate the service and the discount that wasn’t needed. Honestly….its probably the best beer bar in Germany and one of the best in the world. It flies really under the radar. I wish I would have stopped here earlier in my trip so I could make multiple stops.

What a great place! Big selection of great german beers on tap and in bottles. Service is super friendly. The realxed atmosphere out in the biergarten made me feel like I was drinking beers in an old friends backyard. Food was OK. Dead cheap.

I really enjoyed an afternoon and early evening at Cafe Abseits. Gerhard was a very genial and welcoming host, and his suggestion were very good. I especially enjoyed the test batches from Weyermann malting. Highly recommended for anyone interested in learning about and enjoying Franconian beer.

In my opinion this is THE place in Germany for local and regional beers, there is a well balanced selection on offer to suit most tastes. Attentive friendly bi-lingual staff and an owner who is willing to help you through the menu and offer advice. The kitchen is excellent offering generous sized portions and affordable prices. I’ve noticed customers of all ages and many students. Lovely peaceful beer garden.
