Got here on closing night, Dec. 12, 2008, so my rating may be coloured by some of the uniqueness of that night - extra busy, running out of stuff - but I have tried to recognize this to the degree possible. Neat looking place obviously from the outside. Bar area inside is not overwhelming, but dining area in the back is nice with a big fireplace in the centre of the room standing out. Beer selection is normally excellent and even with the drastically reduced selection was still good - started with 6 beers on tap, including 3 Grand River products; by the time we left just Frulli by the bottle. Food was solid. I really wish this place was not closing because my first impression, even in less than ideal circumstances, was a good one. Plus I never got to try the Executioners Ale.

Not just a great selection for the area, but a great selection period - tap list rivals that found in good beer bars in Toronto. Bottle selection very small but well chosen. House ale from Grand River was outstanding and the cask was in superb shape. Food was excellent and above average. Service attentive and friendly. Decor in the bar area is neat, lots of brewery stuff on the walls, although the space seems so small because of the low ceilings (and bright because of the white walls). Tap handles look really nice on the bar - well laid out. Back area more elegant and very well presented. All in all a terrific pub and one that will soon be my local, no matter where I end up living in the K-W area.

So, I FINALLY got to make a trip to the infamous Castle. And I must say, I did not leave unimpressed! I looked around at first to see the whole place, and the decore is actually very impressive and elegant. In the pub area, thereís tons of brewery paraphernalia covering the walls, but done so without being tacky or kitschy. The service was excellent, very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, I couldnít stay for as long as I wished to, as my Dad and my brother had to leave. But I stayed long enough to get a good impression of the place, and to gain a burning desire to return as soon as I possibly can. The selection of beers is just completely out of this world for this area. I enjoyed the Grand River Executioner Ale, which is brewed specifically just for the Castle, my Dad enjoyed his Mill Race Mild, and my brother (who is still underage), said that his schnitzel was very tasty and good. This place is an oasis in a desert of Ontario macro conforming bars and drinkers!

A 1950ís art deco style white castle greets the passerby. Upon entering there is a bar with quite a few taps. A low ceiling, low light room is where one can relax and order a drink. In the back, medieval satyle decor and ambiance would greet the more casual diner or larger party. Harold, our server(also the owner) knows his beer and is passionate about the craft beer scene. Service was quick and efficient. I ordered the beer battered fish on my latest visit, which was fresh, and well prepared. The batter was very tasty, and the portions were large. The beer menu was large enough to keep my mouth watering.
Iíd say this is a must visit for any craft beer lover. Very good.

Great place to go if you are ever in KW.
A great selection of beer, that is starting to see more variation. The have a sampler selection to allow for trying new beer without a full pint, or full stomach.
I would like to see more bottles, and more American beer, but they are certainly well enough stocked that you will find a favorite.
My wife adds that it is very clean, and people are friendly.
My daughter adds that the bathrooms smell nice.

Iíve lived in Kitchener for about 4 years and have suffered from the lack of a good local offering of fine draught beers. Iíve always known the white castle on King St. and had even been there once before - before I enjoyed beer. I recently found their menu online and was elated to discover another chance for fine beer selection in Kitchener!
The place delivers! I visited with friends and we all enjoyed more than is really healthy. Iíve never seen such a large selection of Ontario craft beers and a few rare imports on tap within the region. Hoppy browns, imperial stout, dunkel weiss, real IPAs (vs. Keiths) and no crappy domestic lagers! No Coors, no Blue, no Canadian - and good riddance.
The food was nice enough; the smoked pork chop with mustard and braised cabbage I had was enjoyably rustic and was easily paired with a great German lager. But, to be honest, I was there for the beer.
We spent about a half hour chatting with Harold (the proprietor) in the dining room. He was happy to take requests, give us insights into the bureaucracy of the LCBO and let us know whatís coming up - real cask ale!
In all, weíll all be back and weíll be bringing our friends.

The white Castle on King across from Rockway gardens is a landmark in Kitchener. Now under new ownership it has a new lease on life and has a front pub which boasts the best micro and import tap handles in K-W.
Boilerplate Canadian restaurant food meets Pub fare is the menu. Staples like peppercron steak, fresh slamon, Schnitzel, Ribs and pastas meet pub foods like wings, fish and chips, stuffed mushrooms, jaliapino poppers etc. The Food is simple but fresh and well made.
The Pub section boasts a bar with a good selection of both local micro and import ales and lagers from Warsteiner dunkel to Scotch-Irish porter to Hacker-Schorr Oktoberfest lager. There is a beer of the month promotion as the Castle is always rotating its draft beer offerings. There are always Cask ales on tap and the latest one-offs or specialty seasonal from the better micro brewers in the region....20 tap handles and a cask pump and Herols is still expanding!
The castle has arrived in Ontarioís micro brew scene and is the only place in town to find a wide selection of craft, import and micro brews.
