Visited on 22 Nov 2009, a wet and windy Sunday evening. It was the end of Freshers Week or some other student drinking festival and the whole town was full of drunken youngsters, some in fancty dress others with make-up running down their faces due to the weather and their drunken condition.
The bar was packed with students, you could just about get to the central Island bar and see the overworked staff trying to serve the drunken masses. You could get served on all four sides, or you could normally, if it hadn’t been over run, we stood by the beer engines, which were on two of the forementioned sides. The bar appeared to be made of dark wood and was fairly ornate, tables and chairs lined all four walls, some in mini-alcoves, box wall partitions between them.
My mate and I ordered a couple of Real Ales and waited for a seat to become vacant. Half way down our pints we spied some people leaving and snaffled their seats. We then people/student watched for a good hour as they became more amd more bladdered, great fun. The staff were good, over worked but smiled and nodded in the right places and we even had a chat with one between her meal and starting work again, she was looking forward to knocking off!
For the record the cask ales were: Belhaven ’St Andrews’, Adnams ’Broadside’, Deuchars ’IPA’ and Fullers ’London Pride’. So two Scottish and two English ales, didn’t take a note of the lager clips. We had three of the Real Ales, all were in good order.

Good enough food. Friendly staff, but I thought the cask selection was a bit too mainstream for my liking. There were only about six handpumps going when I was there and of that only one, which was interesting. Worth a visit, but not going to blow you away.

Central Bar became my haunt during 15 days in St. Andrews. Town centre pub with a varied clientele. Decent and qualified food menu. I can recommend both the breaded scampi and the salad bowl with chicken. Attentive service. Rather huge island bar with 12 handpumps, but only half of them in use. Usually there were some cask ales from Inveralmond brewery, among others the Central House Ale, 4.2% ABV. According to the brewery this is a beer specially produced for about six pubs throughout Scotland, only available in cask. The Luvians bottle shop is just on the opposite side of the pub.
