I’ve been purchasing beer and wine at Cloverleaf for a few years now and it just keeps getting better. By no means is this your corner retail beverage establishment, the emphasis here is on quality, not volume. Putnam is not just a manager, he’s an activist. From overlooked and under-rated Italian Pilseners to the best local brews to world class lambics Cloverleaf makes up for its smaller floor space by offering just about the best available in Southeast Michigan. I can make the trip to Southfield because I know I will always find my favorites, something new and even some new favorites. Always. And if you like purchasing singles, there is no match as ALL beers are sold as singles. If you have the choice of only one beer store to visit in Metro Detroit, Cloverleaf should be that one.

Everything here is in singles. This is probably the best part about this place. You can grab beers that you’d be afraid to invest in a 4-pack without hesitating, and the ’singles premium’ you see in a lot of places isn’t bad here. There are many beers that are cheaper per bottle than in a full pack at other stores. They don’t have any macros, which is great, because it’s a small joint. Every square foot of the beer space is devoted to craft beer. The service is fantastic, these guys really know their beer. Great place.

Word-of-mouth from fellow RBers brought me to this one. They sell singles -- lots and lots of singles! The help there is exceptional . . . Putnam’s a real ’net savvy beer lover who’s got it going on over on RB’s main beer rating competitor website. Great guy, great conversation, got to sample their bread and cheese, got some freebies that got me buying more . . . usually singles. Great prices. I’m going back there again when I get the chance! It doesn’t *look* as big as Merchants, but that’s because it’s cut it down to the essentials without a bunch of 6-packs taking up space. All the top accessible and Michigan-accessible beers here. I got the distinct impression that its return-costomership is HUGE, like a large and growing family.

What Putnam and crew lack in quantity, they more than make up for in first-hand experience, quality, attention to detail, customer feedback, and about every other criteria you could possibly look for in a high-end beer/wine store. The beer advocate rankings are posted (as of the date the sign was posted) along with Putnam’s own tasting notes which are, as anyone who’s met him can tell you, fun; unique; and generally right-on. For those interested in things other than bottles, Putnam makes most of his distributor’s keg list available as well at a very reasonable mark up (e.g., 30L of Hoegaarden for like 80 bucks or so). So for parties, family occassions, etc. when you need to introduce Uncle Johnny to a beer other than Miller Lite, Cloverleaf’s your place. If you live in the Metro Detroit area and are a fan of beer, wine, or liquor, you owe it to yourself to swing by.

The atmosphere is nice. Like being in a huge wine cellar. Service is knowledgeable, but more about wine than beer. The selection is above average and all the beer is sold in singles. Which is great for variety, but not cost effective if you are looking for a 4-6 pack. The value is hit or miss. I paid less for some bottles and more for others...than I normally would. Overall, it is a great place if you live or work in the area. I usually stop in on my lunch breaks.

located in a strip mall/plaza among several restaurants/shops. very unassuming front, but it’s clear that the emphasis is on wine. however, the owner is equally passionate about beer--putnam prides himself on his selection of belgians. has the bigger beers from local breweries, otherwise mostly imports. best prices i have seen in michigan! also sells glassware, and liquor--a phenomenal beer store.

Awesome bottle shop. Oh how I wish we had something like this in Ontario. Fantastic selection of imports and regional micros. reasonable prices, actually cheaper than other stores I’ve been to in Greater Detroit. The great thing about this store is that everything is available in singles! Highly recommended.

Stopped in while in Detroit for business. Small place but in brand new building with small beer selection but geared to the beer geek. Every beer that is in six packs is also available as singles which is awesome. Picked up 5 singes of quality brew. They dont carry any macro brews so even though they don’t have a huge selection they make up with all qualtiy beers. Service was great and would be my go to store if I lived in Detroit.

Small place but well lit and an excellent slection. Founs some nice stuff there that I haven’t found anywhere else around here. I didn’t have a chance to talk to the staff but they were courteous and asked me several times if I needed any help. Nice place, I will definately be bcak there many more times!
