82 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 17/20 teorn88 (43) London, England | June 19, 2013 Easy to find pub on the main road. Seems to be populated with a young crowd and not necessarily a beer geek one. Ambiance is good with a fun atmosphere. Interiors are very old wooden pieces, but in a way I fancy. Too old and smelly to be pleasant. Anyways, back to business: the beer selection is very good on English micros, single batches and the house beers. Prices are fair and lower than most craft beer locations in London. Haven’t tried food. Overall, a bit out of reach in that part of town but well worth a visit. I’ll be coming back. | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 16/20 maneliquor (65) Perth, Australia | June 18, 2013 Was bored so decided to treck it out to Hackney. About a 2 minute walk from Hackney Central and very easy to find. Selection of Howling Hops beers was amazing. Also had some good locals like Brodies, Beavertown, Partizan, Kernel. Had a very good selection of A grade ciders which I would love to take the missus to see. Service was friendly and knowledgable. Quick to see you when your glass is empty and recommend things as well as give you tasters for nothing. Very cheap. Under 2 quid for half pours. Cool place and will go back | 84 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 Svesse (181) Hässelby, Sweden | June 16, 2013 Very nice brewpub close to Hackney Central station. The interior is mainly brown wood, quite bare but still feels like a proper local pub. 20 hand pumps, half of them with cider and the other half with well kept ales from interesting micros from around Britain. Seem to have lots of beers from local brewers (have seen Sambrooks, Redemption and Weird Beard) and usually has 2-4 beers from their own Howling Hops brewery. 10 keg beers of high quality (e.g. Kernel, Camden Town). Service is friendly and quite knowledgeable. This is well worth a trip to Hackney and can easily be combined with Pembury Tavern 5-10 minutes away. Great place. | 80 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 madmitch76 (88) , England | June 14, 2013 A proper old boozer is this. Very much as it would have been some decades back apart from the array of guest craft brews and of course the stellar Howling Hops beers.
Service is snappy and the staff know their beer.
Generally a pretty friendly atmosphere here. There are a few too many barstools but nobodys perfect.
Worth the effort to come here both for the sense of history and the fabulous beers. Jump on the Overground at Stratford and go 3 stops to Hackney Central. From threre is less than a 5 min walk round the corner and in to Mare St. | 84 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 Jimmythespoon (68) , Cyprus | May 27, 2013 Visited on a weekday so wasn’t too busy, tried some of the local beers, selection isn’t huge but it’s solid. Loads of casked beers too. Friendly guy working there was also nice enough to give us a quick tour of the brewery downstairs! Got that old school pub feel only with amazing beers! Great place to visit and worth the trek out there. | 80 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 17/20 Theydon_Bois (394) The ’Sham, England | April 13, 2013 Visited on 30/03/13 after a short 6 or 7 minutes walk from the London Fields Tap.
Trad old boozer with an L shaped bar, we arrived at around 4.30/5 pm on a Saturday and only bagged a table because some folks were just getting up to leave as we came back from the bar.
Mixed group of punters in here, age ranges, etc - all making for a good vibe.
Service was good also, no idle chit chat they just got on with the job of dispensing good beer!
Tap for Howling Hops and as such theire beers dominate the line up but other London micros are on offer in the form of Alpha State and Beavertown amongst others on this visit.
Howling Hops bottles available to drink in or take away, my only gripe on this front is that they charge the same price for take away where as up the road at London Fields take away bottles were about £1 less when compared to drink in!
Great boozer none the less and one worth heading out to. Pembury Tavern is also not too far away, and the William IV (Brodies) is about 15 or so minutes away on the bus.
Hackney Central (LOROL) is just over the road. | 84 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 cgarvieuk (130) Edinburgh , Scotland | March 29, 2013 and who doesnt like a cock or two ... nice standard open plan pub... fairly bouncing ... large range ofcask and sligtly smaller keg range ... about 4 of the own .. so good mix... kids welcme ... alround pretty nice | 88 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 17/20 viktorvee (17) , England | March 20, 2013 This place is fantastic! It has a crazy selection of beers, from their own Howling Hops ones, through all the usual suspects of new school London Brewers and far beyond. They also have 4 or 5 real ciders on at any one time. Thier food is nice, though simple, home made sausage rolls, scotch eggs and the like.
My only beef with it is that it gets too busy sometimes and is consequently very loud. | 90 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 19/20 Fin (377) Merton, Oxfordshire, England, England | March 4, 2013 Loz and I visited here on Sat 2nd March 2013. I must say this place was a cracker, it had a really nice feel to it and the beer selection was simply stunning. It is situated close to the overground line and only 7-10 mins walk from London Fields Tap Room where we went first. You enter from a door on the corner of the building and the bar is a large L shaped affair in front of you down the right hand side is handpumps (12+) on the foot of the L sort of ahead of you to the left is the keg taps, We had Brodies/Mikkeller Mofu Stout, Magic Rock Big Top, Howling Hops Chocolate Stout, Brodies London Sour, Brodies Dalston Black IPA, Kernel Citra IPA all were very good the Brodies Sour and Dalston Black IPA were my favourites though. The food range is limited to snacking, so expect pork pies, pickled eggs, nuts, snacking salami etc, we had Pickled eggs, crisps and pork crackling. The two staff were really pleasant (busy) and helpful to people choosing. Its got a nice feel about this place, with a good mix of people, simply furnished, wooden floors throughout. I really liked this place and will make efforts to get here again. | 94 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 19/20 Bryne (218) Bryne, Norway | February 22, 2013 An outstanding old-school pub and great craft beer at a good price. Very knowledgeable staff (and also very bearded) I really liked the Howling Hops beers I tried and I also found Mikkeller/Brodies Big Mofo Stout on tap. A good beer, but you can not drink to many of those strong beers when you are on a serious beer trip! (Visited February 16th 2013) |
