100 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 20/20 alexkeil (4) New York | November 20, 2008 Favorite bar ever...bartenders and servers are always friendly and helpful, selection of beer goes on and on and on...where else in Buffalo do you have to decide between Orval or Rochefort? Classic bar that has been there forever and will always be | 92 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 19/20 spkldhenlvr24 (31) Newburgh/Buffalo, New York | February 25, 2005| Updated December 16, 2008 This is my favorite place. Been on Elmwood since 1934. Cole’s has an Irish pub feel, with old memorbilia on the walls. Great food. Service is hit or miss. Really old bartender thats worked there for 30 something years. Beers on tap you won’t find anywhere in Buffalo. Stone, Rogue, Anderson Valley, Bear Republic. Good bottle selection. Unfortunately they were out of the Three Floyds when I went last. Friendly, beer-drinking people. Classic place. | 92 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 cratez (151) Toronto, Ontario | April 19, 2011| Updated December 16, 2008 Cole’s is a must-visit beer destination in Elmwood Village. It has an awesome Cheers-style ambience with a large, busy bar adjacent to some wooden tables and booths and a bright, open dining room. When we first came on a Sunday afternoon, we were seated with a bunch of college kids who seemed to be grabbing their hangover breakfasts. The atmosphere was quite loud, almost raucous, but we rolled with the punches and ended up having a great time. Second visit was much more laid back, we sat at the bar and received quick, affable service from a middle-aged man who knew a lot about the brews he was pouring.
Beer selection is 35 taps and a massive 100+ bottle list of mostly U.S. micros. Over two days I had Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA, Tröegs Hopback Amber Ale, Bear Republic Old Scouters Barley Wine, and Clown Shoes Hoppy Feet Black I.P.A. on draught and Green Flash West Coast IPA in the bottle. The bartender also gave me a small sample of Harpoon Island Creek Oyster Stout.
Unfortunately the food was mediocre: my eggs were overcooked, the hash browns were soggy, and my girlfriend’s salad had way too much goat cheese in it. However, Cole’s is simply a fantastic place to drink in with the best selection of American craft beer that I’ve encountered thus far. And similar to Blue Monk, its lively and approachable vibe appeals to beer geeks and non-beer-drinkers alike. We really enjoyed ourselves here and we’ll be back on future trips to Buffalo. | 92 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 18/20 hopson (11) Williamsville, New York | February 28, 2008| Updated December 16, 2008 The best beer bar in Buffalo. Hands down. Undoubtedly, you will be pleasantly surprised with both the tap and bottle selection. Its extensive, and Coles has stuff you simply cannot get by visiting other beer stores and bars in the area. Mike the owner is a friendly guy who is really into beer, and it shows. food aint bad either. A must stop if in the area. | 90 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 18/20 Gorbalev (57) Ontario | November 16, 2005| Updated April 16, 2007 I’ve been many times since and I love this place. Great service, amazing tap list, and incredible food. My first stop in Buffalo.
Great old Irish pub type of feel - nothing cookie cutter here, this place has character to spare. Fantastic tap selection, focusing on American Micros (including some rare in these parts ones like Church Works) while still keeping a couple of macro’s around. Bottle selection looked good as well and improving from what I am told. First bartender was friendly enough, but bored and hung-over, but when Mike, the owner came in, myself and the local Buffalo ratebeerian were treated to free samples, good conversation, and fantastic service. I could see how this place could get busy, as it is rather small. Cheeseburger and fries I had were standard pub grub. I’ll be back for sure, highly recommended. | 90 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 18/20 matt7215 (62) Cambridge, Ontario | July 3, 2009| Updated April 16, 2007 stopped by today and loved this place. very well layed out with lots of seating and a great patio. super impressive tap line-up with and equally impressive bottle line-up. great service and awesome prices. id love to frequent this place and ill be back any time im in buffalo. stop by if your coming within 100 miles you wont be dissapointed. | 90 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 19/20 poppap7 (4) New York | February 28, 2011 Cole’s for me is where my love for craft beer started. always going there for dinner with the family when i was younger always keep me interested in the beer. then when i was able to drink it was game on. if you enjoy great food and a awesome American style beer selection look no further than coles | 88 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 19/20 rob6239 (33) Ontario | November 11, 2011 awesome. an amazing 36 beer on rotating taps | 88 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 17/20 rudolf (100) Buffalo, New York | February 20, 2005 Cole’s has been an Elmwood fixture for 70 years. Recently they’ve done a serious upgrade of their beer selection. Last time I went there were taps from Bear Republic, Stone, Flying Bison, Rogue, Ellicottville, Wagner Valley, Brooklyn and others. The bottle selection included Rare Vos, Celebrator, Delerium Tremens, 60 Minute and many more. They even had Robert The Bruce and Alpha King! Bar staff is great, they remember you after your first visit and take care of you. The owner came up to IPFreely and I when he saw us drinking 3 Floyds and we talked for a while. This place rocks!
Next door to Mr. Goodbar | 88 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 18/20 mabel (211) Toronto, Ontario | April 1, 2007 Great atmosphere in both the sunny eating room and in the bar (various locals dining for lunch mid-week). Friendly, courteous staff, apologetic for taking a bit longer in getting our first drinks. Selection is impressive and fresh, both on tap and bottled. Food is gloooorious (visions of Buffalo wraps and Pulled Pork wraps are still dancing in my head) and fairly priced. Overall, a wonderful should-visit establishment if you’re in town for a few hours. |
