82 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 5/10 OVERALL 17/20 yackery (8) California | December 12, 2010| Updated November 28, 2012 Welcoming place with busy, friendly staff who gives adequate tap tastes to make an informed purchase decision. CAH has well-lit, flat-screen TV’s, wooden flooring, tables, stools, exposed ceiling and vent work in a contemporary, urban neighborhood and a nice patio on the Promenade. Unique is the fine-sounding juke box with an excellent selection for all tastes. This is a fun place for the young urbanite; or a beer connoisseur can find offerings of sour beer, delicious stouts, and many more in the rotation.
The cement walls can begin to echo loud conversations like a full chorus and drown out the music as the crowds fill in and the staff goes to mass (no pun intended) service mode. Then they have little time to be bouncing on taps giving lots of sample tastes but still accommodate reasonable requests for one or two. The bottle (and occasionally draught) prices range from understandable to ridiculous - so I like a preview if possible.
Despite its religious motif, CAH is unpretentious, and its "unconventional tavern" service model means that customers order at the counter (like McDonald’s) - though staff are roaming with electronic pads for most efficient (not chatty) ordering. No complaints.
The food is minimal, but interesting, artful, and adequate.
A pair of ceiling fans rotates (two fans on one rotating spindle) to blow the smoke down and create positive pressure inside making for minimal smoke from the patio. Still, the over-stimulation can interfere with enjoyment of the more deeply subtle selections, and finding a quiet corner to savor a serious dollar-an-ounce-or-four beer can be next to impossible. CAH does offer a "chosen one" usually a pint selection from the rotation at $3 when available. Best deal.
There is nearby competition for craft beers on tap at Beachwood BBQ - a brewery / beer bar / upscale BBQ / chop house a few doors down the Promenade where there are now other new bars and restaurants. So this spot is becoming a beer mecca for anywhere near Long Beach. | 90 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 19/20 trampdaddy (43) California | November 10, 2010| Updated November 28, 2012 WOW finely A place near by with a great selection of eclectic beers. the burgers are off the hook and thier is public transportation near by (Blue Line) that will get me close to home. This one is worth a drive if you dont live close. Make your way to the LBC and have a pint or 2 | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 16/20 fourplayed (11) Lakewood, California | October 18, 2010| Updated November 2, 2010 Downtown long beach just east of pine ave. Opened Sept 2010’. Great selection of on tap 24 brews and over 150 bottled brews. You need to get in line to place your order. But, if you start a tab the waitresses will come to your table and take additional orders for beer or food. A sparsely decorated room going for a rustic church vibe. High ceiling with exposed air ducts and plumbing all painted in dark flat black to keep it subtle. Wrought iron chandeliers. Heavy Distressed wood tables. Outdoor patio area. Waitresses were wearing catholic schoolgirl plaid skirts with white button up collared shirts. A bit more pricey then I’d like. But a nice area/place to hang out in when your near the beach. Parking can be tough during peak hours. Public pay parking is available. | 100 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 20/20 TuskerPombe (2) Fontana, California | October 1, 2010 One of the best craft beer experiences in Southern California! |
