Thanks to KyotoLefty for taking me here. Modern place with decent tap selection. Great fun looking around the walk in cellar. Lots of interesting bottles in there. We were on a crawl so didn’t stay long, but the bartender seemed really nice and the prices were good. Will definitely be coming back next time I am in Osaka.

Open for nearly three years now, and this is the first time I’ve made it here. Four taps -- the night I went all four were Oregon brews, and none of them really among the best that Oregon has to offer. Decent bottle selection in the coolers, though nowhere near the 200 mentioned in the listing -- my guess would be closer to 80 to 100. However, they do have an impressive selection of bottles in a large closet-like storeroom, and perhaps that’s where this figure comes from. Be aware (I almost wrote, "Be afraid... be very afraid") that the charge is DOUBLE for any bottles that are opened IN the bar (I have no idea why this is so; I haven’t seen this policy at any other beer bar). Many people simply buy bottles and then go outside to open and drink them. The biggest problem here, as mentioned by JapanTony below, is the service. I ordered a beer that came out of the tap with too much head, and so it took some time to get a full pour. But the server left the glass half-full under the tap and didn’t come back. I waited and waited (10 minutes or more), and eventually spotted him in the back eating and staring at the wall, clearly unconcerned about me or the lonely half-full beer. I finally called another guy to finish the pour. Later on, when I needed to use the restroom, another server/cook shouted at me not to go in because someone was in there. I waited and waited, and after too much time, I finally opened the door and no one was in there. The owner of Craft Beer Base is very active in the local beer scene, although rather a latecomer to it. She has just opened a second beer bar/restaurant, and usually when people do this the service/quality tend to suffer at both places. Anyway, I made it there finally, and I’m not sure if I’ll go back again.

do¶ć ciężko znaleĽć to miejsce. sam lokal jest niewielki (miejsca siedz±ce na górze dla kilkunastu osób i stoj±ce na dole dla następnych kilkunastu) ale przyjemnie urz±dzony, bez zbytnich dekoracji. muzyka dobra, nie zahacza nawet o pop. pracownicy znaj± się na piwie, chętnie doradzaj±, większo¶ć z nich zna również angielski co jest bardzo pomocne przy wyborze piwa. bardzo duży wybór piw butelkowych (choć tylko cztery krany) z praktycznie całego ¶wiata, klasyki, nowo¶ci, lokalne browary. ceny jak na lokal do¶ć zno¶ne, pod warunkiem, że kupuje się na wynos - za wypicie piwa butelkowego na miejscu płacimy za nie podwójnie. jedzenia jako takiego nie sprzedaj±, ale maj± bardzo dobre przek±ski, kanapki itp. maj± genialne wędzone orzeszki. miejsce bardzo ciekawe, zawsze też można spotkać w nim różnorakich obcokrajowców, jedno z kilku ważniejszych miejsc spotkań miło¶ników piwa w osace.

It’s conveniently located near the Umeda Sky building (take the underground tunnel from JR Umeda station).
It is a nice place to drop by for a few drinks and the staff are very friendly and helpful. As noted by JapanTony during events things quickly get chaotic and service suffers so I’ve edited my rating to reflect that.
It only has 4 taps but they change often and the draft beer is reasonably priced. They also offer growler refills!
The real draw here is as a bottle shop, the to-go prices are good (double the marked price if drinking at the bar) and the selection is pretty good. Recently, they mostly focus on Nagano Trading beers and so get them before anyone else, they also have AQ Bevolution beers, a decent selection of Japanese micros and German/Belgian imports though nothing really rare. The selection’s continued to grow but the variety has suffered.
They also organize tons of events. A must if you are in Osaka, especially if you want to grab a few bottles to go. Bonus, it is opened during the day.
Recently, when I head to events the service seems to go down each time. Served the wrong beer, drink it. Order a beer, they tap a new keg it is flat - why are you complaining??? Ummm, why didn’t you tell me so I could order something else? Can I have a beer that is NOT flat??? Nope. Seriously service here continues to go downhill... they seem to be resting on their laurels.

I really wanted to give this place a higher rating, especially as the owner is a firm supporter of the craft beer (and homebrewer) scene, but there are a couple things that need to be ironed out before that happens.
First off, ordering a beer does not mean you will get it. I was told they would bring it, yet waited 10 minutes and nothing. Back down, reminded them, 5 min later nothing. Then reminded them again and finally, after 20 min I got my drink. They were busy, but 3-4 staff should be able to handle 20-30 people. And I was not the only one in this situation. Servers would go upstairs not knowing who ordered what beer and just put them on the table or ask out loud who was waiting. One guy shouted down he was waiting for a pizza for a long time and was told they sold out (although he had already paid). Secondly, the draft selection is pretty poor. What they have is good and priced typically at 1000-1200, but only 4 taps. The bottle selection is wonderful, but charging double to drink in house as opposed to take away is a huge disincentive to stick around. For example a can of Avery to go is 500, but 1,000 to drink on site. Pretty steep for a 350ml serve. While the upstairs is comfortable, the downstairs gets busy and can block ordering. Plus we are subjected to the smokers puffing away next to the bar. I can’t say much about the food, seemed they had a few items in small servings, but not really sure. My suggestions: 1. ban smoking (too small to separate them out, really), 2. charge 25-50% markup on bottles/cans, 3. figure out a serving system, 4. add a few more taps

My first real craft experience in Japan, so rating may change. Nice and quaint, standing room for a dozen and a neat bottle selection. Owner and staff were friendly with a decent knowledge. Take out bottles decent priced, but double to drink there is a bit much. Had fun and would recommend.

Small but good selection. Very nice ambiance, although it can be a bit cramped on the first floor. Limiting the fliers on the second standing bar would behoove them. Service is great and the guys are very friendly. I really like the food, especially the sandwiches.

Nice place with a cafe style to it (especially the upstairs). The staff and ambiance is comfortable and inviting. I enjoyed checking out the bottle room and tend to like bottle shops that allow you to drink. Unfortunately I think that double the bottle price is pretty steep. So far I’ve stuck to the drafts and taken my bottles to go.

The staff here are friendly and helpful, and the prices on the draught taps and take-out bottles are quite reasonable. Strengths lie in Japanese (always good range of Bairds), Belgian, and West Coast US. Inside the place itself is a little cramped, and coming down the steep stairs is tricky after a few high-percentage brews, but it’s cosy, clean and welcoming.

i want to say to the 6 of the 7 people that positively rated cbb,fu for wasting my time!
i did not have the same great experience;i found many beers past date,about 50% of the beers have no price marked,and i was not allowed to bring my backpack in the cellar(maybe i would steal)?
for the 10 yen that i might save going here,it is not worth the trip!
my wife’s comments:not so great and not better then the other bottle shops in osaka and kyoto.

If you have not yet been to CBB, you are missing out. This is one of the best craft beer places in Osaka and has been setting the pace in the Osaka area since they opened in June of 2012. CBB has slowly been earning its reputation as the IT place in the downtown area for craft beer takeout as a bottleshop (double price if you drink bottled-beer on-site, however there is no table charge for drinking pints there) and decent prices for Japan. It’s located just south of Umeda Sky Building. The selection of beer is now at around 200-300 and the shop also has a walk in freezer. The owner, Ai, is very friendly and enjoys talking with customers about beer (in English or Japanese) as does the rest of the staff who are also very friendly. While there are only 4 taps, there is generally a good selection of at least one IPA, a Belgium, Pale Ale, a Japanese craft brew and so on. Can usually choose from a UK half-pint, American pint or UK pint. Very easy to meet other beer enthusiasts here in the downstairs standing area or hang out with friends in the upstairs area. CBB also does regular events (recently they hosted Hoppy Happy Xmas, a joint event with pizza from Devil’s Craft in Tokyo, an IPA Day, etc). The selection here is very good for Japan and CBB is always adding new beers to their lineup while maintaining customer favorites in their lineup. Can’t recommend CBB enough.
