As an amateur beer enthusiast still in college, itís tough to find something besides Keystone Light anywhere in Ames. Cyclone Liquors really fits the bill for people looking to try some real beer for a decent price. The service is friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. Also, what college town sells a $2000 bottle of cognac!? Only Cyclone Liquors.
I am from Ankeny Iowa and travel to this store to purchase beer as there are no quality stores in Ankeny. Cyclone is a very clean and organized store. They have a massive selection of beers domestic micros, imports and singles. The staff is always friendly and helpful as well.
For Iowa this place is not a bad one to visit if youíre near by. The manager was not at all helpful with anything but a young lady who also worked there was more than helpful. In single bottles the mostly had Belgians and a few other European beers but very few craft brews. The had a lot of craft brews in cases. They also had some cheaply priced glassware.
Great store with a very large amount of beer. The help is extremely friendly and know their stuff. They do order everything available from distributors and also special order a very large amount of high proof beers from the state. The store is clean and a great place to shop if you are in Iowa.
The manager says he orders everything available from his distributors, but I think that may be a stretch. Unfortunately, due to Iowaís prohibitionist liquor laws, most of the good stuff (>5% ABW) has to come through the State distributor. Everything except the Belgians are pretty well stocked. Except for the cashiers, theyíre somewhat knowledgeable, very friendly and will talk shop. They will chill beer for you if you call ahead, and will special order kegs if their distributor carries it. They have some wine, whiskey, and beer tasting sessions a couple time a year (as an aside, they also have a good selection of wine and whiskey). Although Iím frequently disappointed, this is the best place Iíve seen in Central Iowa.
I am so in love with this store. I often travel East from Nebraska and made a stop in Ames last week. The selection is absolutely amazing. I also got to know one of the managers, I believe his name was Cliff, very well. He was extremely friendly and helpful. The store is extremely well stocked, the shelves and bottles are clean, and the store is an overall great place. I also loved the Scotch selection; probably the best I have seen in the MIdwest. I will definately be stopping back in the next time I am driving through Ames, Iowa.
I really enjoy this store. The selection is great and the store is extremely well organized and clean. Very different from that other store in eastern iowa. The managers know a lot and are very helpful. One of my favorite stores in the midwest.
Good selection for central Iowa. Front counter guy tried to be helpful but just didnít pack the gear to answer some of my questions regarding available stock; additionally he was busy minding the store. He had to re-submit all of my questions to who I assume was the "boss guy", a very busy man
standing in the back room with his hands in his pockets and way too
important to field my questions himself. Almost knocked me over however in an attempt to sell a six-pack of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (like it was the Holy frigginí Grail) to some guy who entered the store as I was on my way out with my load...which was minimal inspite of a good selection...would have been lots bigger if the "boss guy" had taken the time to help me out.
