88 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 17/20 Jimthechap (32) Christchurch, New Zealand | June 23, 2012 First of all, the place does what it says on the tin. It is a dark room. I freely admit to being fusty and old and will also readily accept that the darkness adds to the overall ambience of the place, a little more light at the bar would be nice, but then it may amount to one or the other. No matter.
Mrs Jimthechap and I had to look for a bit to find the place and had a few trepidations about coming in (as we were after a fully blown meal). We thought that we’d have a drink as I hate a wasted journey and was immediately impressed by the range of craft beers from a good variety of brewers. The pricing of those beers is a little on the expensive side, but I hold no grudge here as hospitality in Christchurch is a difficult financial climate indeed. The pricing of the food is extremely reasonable, but what impressed us (despite only having a bowl of corn chips and salsa) was that the breads and pizza bases etc were being prepared fresh and to order. They appeared attractive and we were wavering about staying on for a meal, but the notion of curry was irresistable at this point. The staff are the owners who are young, personable, extremely knowledgable and eager to share their vision of their own perfect place. A definite recommendation from me to anyone who is visiting Christchurch and wants to get a good feel for the beerscape while enjoying a place notable for its quirks while assisting in the fufliffing the dreams of its owners. |
