94 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 19/20 mullet (224) Melbourne, Australia | January 3, 2010 Easily the best brewery tour I’ve ever done, and I didn’t even go there for one. The entire brewery is done up like their label designs which is quite entertaining. Rowdy locals keep it interesting and Kris hangs around to serve beers and chat. Lovely fella. A few of the standards on tap and the amazing Oerbier Reserva in bottles when I visited. The mum runs the tour and tells filthy jokes in several different languages, shimmies up ladders and generally bounces around the whole place. What a dynamo. The brewery itself is amazing too - heaps of old gear is still in use, and obviously producing great beers. Still one of the most memorable places I’ve been in Belgium. About a 30 minute walk from Diksmuide train station. Shame it’s only open on weekends like all the other good places in this country. | 90 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 eManu (38) Kuala Lumpur & Brussels, Belgium | June 2, 2010 This place is fantastic. The best brewery in Belgium. Was lucky to arrive just before the Sunday tour of the brewery. Great beer stories from the 93 year old grand mother of the brewry and she know her beer. I was so please to see that they have well recovered from the fire. Kris, the boss was very nice to serve us some nice samples of Stille Nacht and their Special Experemental Brew 2010, that was like being in haven there.
Very very worth visiting. On Sundays. | 90 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 Glouglouburp (345) Montreal, Quebec | February 2, 2013 My second trip to Belgium made me realize that I forgot to review this place from my first trip there in 2006. One of my favourite Belgium souvenir. I got there through private transportation but be ready for a long walk from the nearest train station. Tours on Sundays only and I recommend it. The tour has no technical information whatsoever. Don’t think you’ll learn anything about De Dolle brewing tricks. The tour is more a history lesson of the brewery. Given by a 150 year old grand mother it was totally unreal. Very very cool. Then you can drink at the brewery pub. I was served Arabier and Oerbier by the brewer himself. He was wearing a shirt that I didn’t think anyone who dare wear in public. This place is unreal. Their beers are unreal. You must visit if you love De Dolle. | 90 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 20/20 BelgBeerGeek (32) Antwerp, Belgium | December 18, 2012 Visited this 2 weeks ago with Dennoman, took the train from antwerp ,a 2 hour drive and then it was 6minutes of busdriving so actually pretty do-able if you don’t want to look for a designated driver ...
Took the tour with Kris ’s mother ( who i believe is 96 at the moment !! )
And it was great fun, she sure knows allot about the brewery and the ingrediënts used, and she sure knows how to get the show going.
Went there offcourse to pick up a bottle of SNR 2010, and we were able to taste some beers on draft like fresh Arabier, really good btw ! and the SNR 2010 and regular stille nacht on tap, really jummy ! the food altough it’s only local made sausage and Paté made with oerbier but i just love these plain simple foods !
Kris and his wife were a little bussy at the time to actually chat with them and we only had a good 3 hours with the 45min tour included before we had to go back to the station. but then again there were allot of visitors and offcourse customer for the SNR 2010 so i don’t blame them :-) very good place to visit ! | 88 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 nickd717 (80) San Francisco, California | July 24, 2009 Awesome place to visit, especially on bike (so you don’t have to drive - drunk biking is awesome!). I made the mistake of driving so I had to limit myself, which I really really regret. The beer here is awesome. Kris Herteleer, the brewmaster, does most of it by himself, which is incredibly impressive considering you see his beers all over Belgium and the US. His wife, kid, and mom, were also just hanging around. Great people. I had the pleasure of talking with Kris for an hour or so on a Saturday afternoon in between the arrivals of biker groups. The guy is an artist - his paintings are all over the tasting room - but his greatest art is his beer. They had about 4 beers on tap and those and a few more in the bottles, plus a couple rarer/out of season ones if you know what to ask for. The tasting room is located back behind the brewery (you need to walk through it to get there) and there is also some merchandise for sale. Kris’ mom does an English tour every Sunday at 2. Nice patio outside overlooking the Belgian countryside. If you’re ever in the western area of Belgium, this place is highly recommended. | 86 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 17/20 Travlr (999) Washington, Washington DC | August 25, 2011 Nothing beats taking the tour with Chris on Sundays of this old brewery with its famous open fermenter, then sharing a few in the tasting room. All the clasics on draft and in bottles, plus an occasional surprise keep me coming back. | 86 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 18/20 fablo75 (13) Rome, Italy | March 8, 2010 Great place to visit, Kris and his wife are really wonderful persons. I didn’t visit the brewery. It is possible only on appointment, but I had the pleasure of talking with them drinking their great creations in the pub into the brewery with others visitors. The beers on taps are magnificent and we tasted also some Oerbier Reserva from different years. Take care with the alcoholic content, here it’s really easy get drunk... | 86 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 18/20 suprchunk (70) Heinsberg, Germany | May 5, 2013 Decent size drinking area that housed us after the tour by Kris. Okay selection, but they were missing some of their regular offerings. No biggie. Price is fair given that you are paying for the nice atmosphere as well. Tour was nice. Walked past the fully stocked cellar hiding a lot of their older and special beers. | 84 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 19/20 Roger939 (4) Etterbeek, Brussels, Belgium, Belgium | January 23, 2011 Enjoyable afternoon. Mom give an interesting tour and is very proud of her sons. This really is a hobby brewery as they brew only at the end of the week and the pub is only open Saturday and Sunday. Kris is easy to talk with and obviously enjoys visitors. Lots of locals including kids and dogs. Only complaint, they only had 3 beers available the day we visited. | 84 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 18/20 tderoeck (126) Gent, Belgium | November 29, 2011 (visit: January 2011) Nice relaxed atmosphere with a lot of walkers or cyclists stopping by for a drink. Service can be a bit slow, but Chris is not the kind of guy to stress out. Selection is seasonal, but I think if you only have so many beers, you should offer all of them in the brewery. And which Belgian beer geek did not take the tour with Chris’ mom? A big little old lady. Amazing how she even does the tours in English! A must have been for any Belgian beer geek and traveller capable of getting there (I figure you really need a car to get there). |
