80 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 16/20 Christian (197) Odense, Denmark | May 6, 2013 Funny little place, with a very relaxed atmosphere, dust in the corners and service whenever the owner/bartender i ready. Even if there was food, you wouldn’t want to eat here, but it’s an excellent place for drinking. Big menu of bottled beer, with cheap Westvleteren looking very attractive. La Chouffe on tap also caught my attention. | 84 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 17/20 Bloekie (12) , Belgium | November 16, 2012 Gerard, the owner, is a walking encyclopedia. The ambiance is that of an old-style Flemish pub. Beer menu is extensive, but pretty local (Belgian beer aplenty). Only open after 8 PM, so not overly touristy. | 76 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 15/20 Plaas (48) Alkmaar, Netherlands | September 11, 2012 Only opening in the late evening, which makes this pub unattractive if you cannot stay overnight in Mechelen. The interior is very beautiful. Extensive beer list, but as stated by kraddel, not as special as one might expect. Belgian classics, no international stuff, lots of beers that taste more or less the same. Still, this place is a must visit if you are in Mechelen (well, if you are there after 8PM...). | 64 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 13/20 kraddel (25) deurne, Belgium | August 10, 2012 so, after hearing for this for months ( oh you like special beer? you should go to mechelen, to de stillen genieter) , after beiing to earley so i couldnt make it ( opens at 8n how am i gonna get my train back dudes? ) i finjaly got there, and got a bit dissapointed ...
the place looks realy cozy, with much bottles ( some nice ones, somme common ones ) so thats a good start. a big beer list huray. but after reading the whole thing, i had to conclude it were all ’ fillers’ dont get me wrong, nothing bad with that, but why should i come all the way here? the beers i find here are supermarkets stuff, added beershopstuff, and some things nobody knows of. they dont have caractere rouge or something in that degree of specialty. this is a nice bar, in mechelen, FOR mechelen but in my opinion not woth a trip going there , especialy for the bar. (unless you want a 11 year old beer from gouden carolus, wich is ( that i found) the most special thing they had. )
nice service, nice looks, but a special beer bar needs real specials in my opinion. and dont even get me started on the music ...... ;p | 88 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 19/20 happyhoppy (44) , France | June 11, 2012 A cozy place with the most extensive beer menu I have come across. Well organised beer menu and an excellent selection of different beer styles, vintages and beers from other countries. The best part is the PRICE OF THE BEERS. Its unbelievable. never had beers so cheap in a bar in Belgium. Well worth a visit for a beer lover when in Mechelen. | 22 AMBIANCE 1/5 SERVICE 1/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 1/10 OVERALL 1/20 BriSava (77) , Japan | December 21, 2011 On a superficial level, very really great prices.
Westvleteren Blond: 3.4 Eur, Westvleteren Extra: 3.6 Eur, Westvleteren Abt: 3.9 Eur.
Bur if you order bottled beer, then you receive ONLY GLASS WHICH IS SERVED BEER, not bottle itself, this is the fake. Someone received St. Bernardus in spite of Westvletern and the master could not display the bottle.
My friends who ordered Berliner Weisse but he received belgian wheat ale which is served Berliner Weisse glass and the master also could not display the bottle.
Is this master’s silent enjoyment (Stillen Genieter) ?
It’s just a cheat and that’s the last thing you should do. So you should be careful not to be taken in him. | 86 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 19/20 minist (10) , England | August 17, 2011 Really great prices here - opening seems a bit random, was about 20:15 when we got in. The owner was cool, like a quiet beer santa. Westvleteren at realistic prices, and a great selection in general - well worth a visit! | 84 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 16/20 jebbe (3) Malmö, Sweden | July 12, 2011 Better selection than it seems. You can get hold of vintage bottles of gueuze etc. that isn’t on the menu. Place is nasty in a nice way, staff is friendly and a visit is highly reccomended.Only downside is that it’s facing an annoying nightclub. | 82 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 5/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 18/20 txspartan (44) Wilrijk, Belgium | June 1, 2011 Though it takes a while at times to actually get what you’ve ordered, Den Stille has quite an awesome selection of beers and is a must visit for any serious taster. | 90 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 18/20 Travlr (999) Washington, Washington DC | September 15, 2010 Terrific place just near the center of Mechelen. Long and narrow, lots of bits and bobs hanging from the ceiling. Looks well-worn and lived-in. Friendly and helpful staff. Can get smoky, which is the only negative. Beer list is extensive, and although a few beers were out, they had all the Trappists (yes, all) at amazing prices (best I’ve seen in Belgium). Definitely worth going far out of your way to visit. |
